Hiya Crazyhorse I found a VIN ID "decoder" HERE (http://www.vehicleidentificationnumber.com/jeep_3.html)
But to figure out your engine, you'll need to get the numbers off of it. The vin doesn't always take into account options - IE 232/258 (I-6), 304, 360 or 401.

This is what your VIN J-8-A-25-N-Z-027480 works out to ...

VIN # Result
J JEEP® Corporation
8 1978
A 1972 - '79: Toledo, Automatic, Left Hand Drive
25 1974 - '80: Truck, J-10, 119" Wheelbase
N 1978 - 80: 6200# GVW, models 15, 16, 17, 18, 25, & 45
Z 1979 - '80: n/a.

The 7th position normally was the engine code and a "Z" indicates a 401. slide under it with a flash light and look by the motor mount 304 360 or 401 will be cast into the block.

What VIN coding also doesn't take into count is motor swaps. A guy I know bought a FSJ thinking it had a 401 because of the VIN and the PO saying it was "just rebuilt" when in fact it was just gotten from a junkyard and was a 360.

:t: Also note service replacement engines did not have numbers stamped in that location. That is if it is or was a warranty replacement. :!:

If the side of the block says 401 I will pay shipping  J/K the Z is the dead ringer but remember that sometimes owners will swap motors, I bought a 401 that showed up as a 304 once...makes for a bad day....Good luck with that 401 :t:

Thanks for all the info. I'll check the block and report back on what I find.

slid underneath the jeep last nite. In large numbers behind the motor mount read "401". Thanks for the assistance.
