LOL, OK not to poke fun, but of all people to kill an AMC engine due to no oil pressure, Jeez Louise!! 8) But man, that sucks. Same thing happened to me though, but not so bad. Picked up my 401, dropped in a new cam, intake, carb, etc. Finally fired it up and after 15 minutes it started knocking. :(: Maybe bad things come in threes and everyone else will have good luck from here on out! So are your engines rebuildable guys??? I sure hope so!!
Jack
PS-MC, so what kind of fuel were you running to run 11:1 compression?!?!

That stinks Fuzz!! At least it is just the block, right? Those aren't that hard to find compared to the cranks. Hmmm, maybe time to upgrade to an aluminum block!!!! :t: :? :!:

Fuzz make sure its not your block...sometimes coolant can travel along crevaces on the engine and make it look like the block is cracked.

You can Weld it. :t:

Join the screwed up motor club of 2004, i picked up my second 401 down in LA in April, from a guy who just kept throwing money at his jeep and was getting hosed (and he didnt know it), the poor guy paid to have the 401 rebuilt with forged pistons, according to the machine shop recipt new pistons and all less than a year ago. Let it sit for a year without running it, fired it up and it didnt run right ran it for 4 months did a compression test, it had Lost compression on a cylinder sold the motor $600 to me, and im not complaining, all parts included, R4B, Doug Thorleys, Crowler Cam, roller rockers, Holley 770.

Turns out it Dropped a couple of valve seats, they just ground the seat down into oblivion to seat the new valves, Heads are beyond saving, it was suffering from coil bind (high lift cam) and improper length pushrods with roller rockers. Then last thursday i was checking the cylinder taper how does 12 thousands sound. Looks to me that that shop re-ringed it pocketed the cash for the new $700 forged pistons they charged him for and ran. 111!!! Oh well I got a good deal with the parts and shell still give me three or four seasons then she get retired to backup duty. :t:

Not as bad, the motor didnt come apart on me, sure was bad for the original owner who then sunk $6000 on a GM conversion, but i do feel for ya guys.

Good Luck

Price range whats that  I was just jerking your chain on the aluminium. Some might consider it an option but im with ya there, i keep a spare in the barn too. Its not worth getting into a tight spot again without a motor. Glad to hear youve got reinforncements already stock piled.

Think the crank is salvagable? Looks pretty ugly on the journal

I guess I'll just keep my complete low mile (under 60K) 401 in the corner of the garage until the 360 dies. I've never had a problem with the 360 since the rebuild for a bad factory cam bearing. Had about 80K at rebuild, about 50K since.

Don't forget to bring all that stuff with you this weekend (my 401 long block) - you'll be  wet and dirty sleeping outside on the ground, and by Fri PM you'll be irratable and just no fun  8) :? :lo1l:

OBTW, 2 tents, 2 bags, tarps and I'm thinking about the 10x10 canopy, all the cooking gear, pots, pans etc. Everything for a leisurely campout :t:
