Ok I will ask the pro's this question.

I have and 86 with a 904 and a 207 t-case that is gernading what better t-case's will fit onto the 904 directly, will the 231? or the 208? has anyone done this?

yes and yes.....depending on the count of your input gear..in some yj's with the 4cyl it was 21 spline, if yours is 23 you can use a dana 300 or np231.....ect I am cloudy on the 2.8 6cyl and 4cyl's used in xj's when pertaining to the T-case

I have found out that the input for the 207 was 21spline for the mauals and 23 for the autos, A 300 would be awosme!!!!

NP208 from a full size will fit rock solid. It already has no slip yoke and it's rated for twice the power of the NP207. (built to handle AMC 360, Chev 454 and Ford 460)
