The only problem I see is with the factory heat ducts. I thought about mounting 2 extra gauges above the stock volt/oil gauges. Because of the heat and defroster ducts, there's not enough depth to mount even a standard 2" gauge. Bigger gauges would be entirely out. A shallower electronic gauge might work, but I like mechanical gauges.
Now, if you were to raise the mounting area (like the military), everything changes.
Just my .02, check behind the dash for clearances.

I have a friend in custom metalwork. I'm sure that if you know the thickness and can supply dimensions, corner radius, and gauge layout and sizes (maybe a cardboard template), he can cut you a piece of stainless. PM me if you want his shop number.
He built me a really nice tool box/storage bin for the back of my CJ.
