I have looked all through the postings (as well as many other places,) and haven't found reference to this, so here it goes.

Ever since I dropped the rebuilt 360 back in my 82 Cherokee I have been hearing this strange noise (I know, nothing unusual for a Jeep.) At first, I thought is was coming from the back of the motor, but a stethescope check revealed it is coming from the the tranny (727,) right about where the torque converter is. It almost sounds like a rocker arm ticking, but with a steady surge.

Any ideas? Anyone ever heard this before?

Wanted to ask before I rip everything back out.

Sounds to me like either your dust cover or engine plate is rubbing on the flywheel or the torque converter bolts. Pull the dust cover off and the plate and look for a shinny spot where it is touching. Then bend it so it doesn't touch.

Thanks, I will try that again. I thought the same thing and checked once before, but didn't find anything. The 'surging' is what throws a wrench in the whole thing. It isn't terribly loud, but the fact that it wasn't there before the rebuild is buggin' me.
