I found some info on flywheels. It seems that an AMC 360 is suppose to have a casting # of 3196929. A 304 is 3212651 and a 401 is 3212655. However mine on my 360 is 3197219.

After a little researching I found out that the flywheels with this number are very rare and evidentally no one knows for sure what there originally from. Mine seems to be version 3 b/c the number isn't followed by a C, and mine has numbers above the square counterweight (which are K-266)

Whats confusing is it says version 3 without the c following the number is either for a 360 or a 401. That confuses me b/c I have been told elsewhere by 2 different people that the 304 and 360 flywheels were alike 401 is internally balanced and differnet, but this article says that the 304 has the oddball flywheel without the counterweight. If anybody can contribute any other info, please chime in. TIA

Hard to say maybe their number system is off. Does your block have the CID cast into the sides?

Yea, its stamped 360. It came out of a 1978 wagoneer, but it was an automatic so I bought the flywheel in a jeep boneyard. I told em i needed a flywheel for a 360 and they sent it to me via ups. So I don't know what it came out of. They don't know either. Its been 5 years ago.

I called them about the correct part number for the 360 flywheel and he said "it don't matter, theres not enough difference in the 304/360 flywheels for it to matter, the 401 is the engine that uses a different flywheel"

Whatever, I must have gotten lucky with one that would work b/c the flywheel has been the engine 20,000 miles with no abnormal vibrations  I would just like to know that the flywheel is indeed the correct one.

casting numbers didn't always match part numbers- some 360 flywheels (1970 &1971) had the same external balance as the 1970 390 & 1971 401- these were the last years that used the borg-warner automatics- the cranks had a nearly flat rear face- in 72, the torqueflite trans needed a larger pilot for the converter & the flywheels & flexplates started indexing off the extended part of the crank near the center instead of the outer rim- if your engine has no vibration issues, you're good to go- we had a customer's 89 firebird that the factory engine was so far out of balance that you could make the dash shake at any harmonic of 1200 rpm- (1200- 2400- 3600 rpm)- must have been break time at the generous motors plant!!!!!!!!!!
