I've been thinking about this for years, and perhaps its too dangerous to try - given my experience already....But oh well here goes

What would it take and would it even be benefical to

power the wheels - Individually with 4 hydraulic motors.........

Or

instead of a Drive shaft, mount a hydraulic motor to the Yoke of the differential?

I"ve seen this done on construction vehicles, and wow, somebody tell me they dont have power - and you rarely see them breaking things.

What would it take to make a hydraulic crawler? Or where could I look to find more information?

Hey Xtremoverkill, It would make for one very capable krawler, all it would take is mounting a dual drive pump set up on the rear of an automatic transmission, four hydraulic motor with planetary gears (to compound your torque) knuckle's and spindles to mount the motors in, two inner-coolers to keep the fluid at the proper operating temperature, about a 20 to 25 Gallon holding tank, and about 100 feet of 5k PSI hose with fitting......

All of the Logging Skidder that our development company uses hydraulic hub motor's their not fast but it takes a lot to stop them in their tracks......

The only draw back with this type of system is keeping the hydraulic fluid cool enough so it will not cavitate......

It would make for an interesting project to say the least...... :-|

There used to be a vw powered mud racer called the black widow that used hydrolic motors on the front. It was wicked fast in its day.
