229 it a vac shift for high, lever for lo, viscus couppler in high, costs more to replace.
208 is reg lever shift 2-4hi-4lo case, min to convert from 229 to 208 on a fullsize jeep is the correct 208 rear drive shaft, same shift lever can be used, if the truck does not have vac disco, man hubs can be put on. :t:

Thanks, I have both & someone wanted to buy both of them & asked the question & I didn't know the answer.

THe tag on the 229 also has a 261 stamped on it.

It came out of a 86' waggy driverside drop.

Thanks,

are you sure the 229 came from an 86, :-| that shoild be a 228, had an open diff in 4hi, instead of the viscus coupler. :t:

I was told the rolling chassie was a 86'.

It has a vacuum acuator on it.

If I had a camera I would take a pic.

As I mentioned the tag @ the bottom has a 261 on it & then the holding screw w/a 86' & @ the top of the tag has the 229.

Hummmmm

228 and 229 are the same except for the internals, i guess you can believe the tag, all the info i've seen just says 86 had the 228, that's not to say it wasn't swapped out at some time. :-|

Did you mean to say the 208 (not 228) & 229 looked the same but the internals were different.

What's different about them, the vacuume stuff?

So is this t-case a good boat anchor?

i meant 228, it is like the 229 vac shift etc, without the viscus couppler inside. :t:
