1 more distributor gear question

If a distributor gear gets all torn up on a 360 engine,would this destroy the valves or push rods or other things?Or does the gear just need to be replaced and the engine firing order matched back up with the distributor when its installed?Thanks for the quick reply.

worst case scenario...it eats the oil pump and bearings...best case just replace the gears. Usually it eats the oil pump but you can get lucky if this happened over a long period of time
