Oil on clutch

The rear seal on my 258 has been leaking for some time now so my clutch plate is probably covered in oil. I have not pulled the clutch out yet but if the plate still has enough meat left on it, is there a safe way to clean the oil off with out harming it?

It it's saturated, best bet is to replace it. Especially with all the work it takes to get there. If the pressure plate is low mile, de-grease it well, and replace just the clutch disk. If it's all high mile, replace it all and be done. The springs in the pressure plate weaken with heat and age.

A clutch is a lot of work to do half-way, and then have to re-do.

:smile: I agree. I had to replace the rear seal on my 88YJ. It really sucks. So while the engine was out I replaced a bunch of gaskets and pressure washed the engine compartment and underside of body. Clean all that old oil off. Then replaced the pressure plate, clutch, and throw out bearing. Don't want to have to do that for a long time.
