Anybody put a Lock right in an AMC20? I got a Power trax lock right and dissassembly was ok. All reassembled and then I put the Pinion shaft back in and the shaft pushes the drive plates too far apart and is all wrong. I called tech support and they think the pinion shaft is too large and I should buy a new one and put bushings in to match. I will post pictures later to demonstrate. :!:

Not yet so keep us posted. That's one of the things I'm thinking of for the Grand Waggie ...

Well after alot of BS and tech support I found out that most AMC20 have a Pinion shaft of .754". I have a heavy duty Differential assembly with a 7/8" shaft. The locker is designed for .754. I bought it from Rocky Road Outfitters and They only allow in store credits for returns. So now I am stuck either buying a replacment shaft and installing bushings and shims or replacing the differential assembly or selling this kit and buying something else. :(:
I did get the front locker installed and other than needing some extra shim it went in fine. :sa: I did find all my bearings in the front need replacing. Oh well! :?:

I cheated and paid to have mine put in. I have had the rear in for about 3 years and the front for 2 years. I have not had any problems other that unwanted lane changes when I get on it hard or get off of it quickly. I fixed that by making sure my tires where the same dia. With my old tires I had to keep one at 28 pounds and the other at 29.

Hey you just answered a question running through my mind. =D>
I was wondering the other day why my jeep now changes a different direction. After reading your post I realized I replaced the rear tire with the spare.

Well after several weeks and a couple of Emails Rocky Road responds that they will help me out at their cost. Sounds good. The only solution they had was ARB air locker for an additional 550+ dollars. I call and make the arrangments to have the old unit sent back. Then I get an email from them saying they will sell me a special order replacment carrier and shaft for my "rare" unit. This will allow me to use the unit I just returned for 20+ dollars. I checked and found that they manufactured a couple of thousand of these untill they redesigned it. Basically if you have a limited slip you get no increased performance with a power trax locker. So do I leave it alone? Or replace the whole axle? Or do I put a full time locker in? Some have had to brace the AMC 20 and like it. Any ideas? Suggestions. My head is spinning. :!:

Call up Randy's Ring and Pinion. they treated me very well with every purchase I have made. You can haggle with them also so don't be afraid. I have a Detroit in my AMC 20 and haven't trussed it and it has held up fine.

:(: I finnally called again and Rocky road failed to come forward with a solution. They are sending the part back. I guess I will have to sell it on EBAY. Anyone interested?
Think twice before you use this company. I started this in May and it is now end of July!

Bummer dude - sorry to hear your 'getting the shaft' (sorry, it's Friday). Did you price the replacement shaft and kit?

Got lucky found a carrier on Ebay cheap. Now I can used the locker I bought. I was trying to put the original carrier back in but I could never get the spider gears lined up for the shaft to go through it. I about ruined my axles.
I hope this ends my dealings with the rear axle.

I just started mine - - - - again
OK, so I've gotten Erin's YJ 'bout done and over to the inspection station (yea Virginia :(: ) Just need to install the tune machine and speakers.
So I figure it's time for me to get back to fix'n my rear brakes in the CJ.
I stuffed a late 80's HD-AMC20 axle under there with a 4.56 Detroit replacing the stock one with an open 3.73.
The plan is to strip all the BS off it - old shock mounts, the bent Chebby chit the PO had installed (tired of bending and tweaking trying to get the brake pads set up right, and maybe the original perches??
I cheezed out and bought a whole setup from TSMMFG (http://www.tsmmfg.com/)

Got the axle out and up on the work bench - a task when one is by one's self! I aint big enough to clean and jerk this thing soooo .... with a 2 ton chainfall and a dog chain - got'r up there
http://members.cox.net/mudrat/HD-AMC_20/axle-lift-1.JPG
And of course the obligatory cheez shot with my likeness :P

So I unbolted and pulled the axle shafts, stuffed rags in the ends and figured now is the time to replace the seals and bearings too. But what did I find??? Spun splines on the long side
http://members.cox.net/mudrat/HD-AMC_20/spun-spline-1.JPG

So instead of just changing the bearings, I'll be changing the shafts too. And probably jerking the diff to inspect the splines in there too
Stand by for more as this project progresses ...

Hey Rat, I work out, all you had to do was call.
I know you do 'Mongo' :t: But I have no clue what your schedule is these days (days or night at HQ????) or if the spousal unit will let you out to help ;-)
You know your welcome by anytime - - especially being only 1/2 mile away
Not a lot of confidence in the brakes holding. This is a weld by the PO!
