Running Dual alternators.

Would MC's bracket allow this? Running one is stock location then running one up higher. Trying to get a 24 volt system going.

Discuss :sa:

what about just getting a single 24 alternator like off of a military 1 1/4 ton whatever they were called with the 6.2L diesels in them.

Well, this it becomes a pita to run my 12 volt stuff. I would need a DC to Dc convertor or something similiar. That is why I was thinking it might be easyer to just keep the 24 volt system isolated. (This is for a winch only setup)

I'm SURE someone will correct me if I'm wrong. for 24 volts I assume that you will use 2 batts. Batt1 ground - jumper + to - of batt2 then hook the alt to frame and + of batt 2 sime with the winch. If you hook your chassis to batt1 + and chassis ground you will have 12 volts. I believe most late model alts will have a different recifier for 12 and 24 volt, you would just have to use the correct one. I'm prety sure that is true of the Ford 3G which can be had as a 12 volt 200amp.

Actually I have some 24v Lead Acid batteries that I'm planning on using. So I will have a deditcated 24v system in conjunction with my excisting 12v system.

Actualy I got to thinking bout the problem (this is what usualy gets me in trouble). An alternator produces a hf ac which is then turned into the correct dc voltage by a rectifier. What if you used something like a 3G with the guts for a 200 amp then bussed two rectifiers, say a 90@12vdc and a 160@24vdc. The only reason I suggest the 3G is that the rectifier is on the back of the case. It is unlikely that both systems would draw at the max so I wouldn't think it would lead to melt down. I'm planning to use two electrical systems one 130 amp to a red top optima to power the front winch and the chassis the second a 160 or 200 amp to a yellow top to power an onboard tig and the rear winch. That way with both Optimas having top and side posts if I cook something I should have to only play switchy wires in case I fry something. The winches are both Warn M12000s

To optain the 12v dc they usa a full wave rectefier (basically 4 diodes) Now with only two, you will essentially only be getting half the power. (half wave rect) I think you would end up with something more like 12v and 6v. It been along time since i have broken out the old EE diagrams. Every 24V altenator I have seen has been rewound for 24v.

Other problem is when using only two diodes you loose effeciency.

Correct me if I'm wrong as it's been some time since I have worked with them. I have a spare alternator maybe I will spin it up with an electric motor and give it a try 111!!!
