So when you have a collapsed lifter you will find the ball cup stuck in the piston 80% of the time it is from overheating. The spring fatigues as well, more and more the progression of a engine's service life will diminish with beating on it.

This hydralic lifter is made up of 5 parts
1. spring
2. small round bearing type ball
3. ball cup
4. piston, which is held in by a small u clip
5. body
When purchase heavy duty lifters you will find a slightly beefier spring with a great spring rate.
