what kind of rear end came in a 70 sst 390 from the factory? It is the stock housing just modified internally, 5.00 gear and a locker, but i guess the locker could be factory, not sure here.

Should be an AMC 20. Perfectly round cover with 12 bolts.

thanks, I was just wondering how hard gears are going to be to find for it.
I want to change it to a 4.10 or something in that range.

Most everyone has gears for them. Same center section that was used in Jeep CJs until 1986. You can get gears at Jeep sites all the way up to 4.88. I went with 3.73s in my 69 AMX (390/auto, 3.15 gears stock). With 26" tires and those gears I'll be at nearly 3500 RPMs at 75 MPH. I didn't want to rev it higher than that if I take it on the highway. Kind of a compromise between off-the-line power and highway revs.

The T-5 is not up to the amount of power that can be made by a good running AMC V8. The Rebel Machine had a 390 with a cast-iron version of the R4B and was rated at 430 ft/lbs. of torque. A modded 390/401 can go to 500/500 quite easily. Add traction to that equation and you have a problem.

Richmond no longer sells 5 or 6 speeds for AMC. If you find me one, I have a $100 bill for your effort.

The AMC20 will make a long streak of 90wt for the tow truck to follow.

An early (65~72, 65 style being a little narrower at the flanges) Mustang nine-inch is practically a drop-in, very little changes. Bigger U bolts, shock mounts to fit the bigger U bolts, & an adapter U joint. Piece-O-cake.

If you are wanting to sell the locker & gear, it may be the rare Group19 goodies and worth a fair chunk of change, enough to cover the upgrade to the Ford 9" with whatever gears you want, traction bars, plus a posi for it.

Boy, I shore hope the T-5 I'm putting in my Rebel holds up at least for awhile.
BTW, won't a Chevy manual trans work? I know it will bolt to the bell housing, and the input shaft is 1-1/8" 10 spline, but I don't know about the pilot lenght.

Thanks for the info, I think that for now, I will be running a WC T-5, because it is what I can afford. Hopefully, in the future, I will come across a DNE or Richmond 5 speed.

You know there is a guy ( I don't remember his name) gave me a bit of advice a couple years back about putting a WC T-5 behind an AMC.... He runs one in a 390 powered Javvy. Says he hasn't had any problems with it. I think at the end of the day if you take reasonable care with your shifts and don't roast the tires all the time you won't have too many probs....

BTW Use the Ford pattern T-5 it is correct length and all to bolt up to a 75 up 3 speed bell.
