As some of you know, my 408 is a healthy built motor. I am currently running a crane h-272-2 hyd cam. It is a pretty small cam for my build but I have to pull 15" of vaccuum @ 800 rpm for the class I race in. I'd like to move my rpm range upwards a bit for more top end power but I have to keep the vaccuum in mind. I'm contemplating going to a solid lifter cam vs the hyd cam but I'm cautious about over-camming. What have some of you run/are running and what vaccuum did you pull? What cam would any of you recommend? Thanks!

Im not sure on the grind.. but look in to the rhoads lifters.. they "mask" the vacuum loss by making the cam seem smaller at an idle.. then as the RPM comes up and the lifter Pumps up or whatever it does you get the bennies of the full grind while still preserving the high vacuum at idle.. I have used them on an amc but lots on small block chevs and fords..

I can definately do that....I had them in my 360 with good results. If you could select a hyd cam what would you choose? AMC Preformance parts lists a great selection of race cams in both hyd and solid profiles but they don't list enough grind specs to choose from the specs alone. I sent them an e-mail but have not received a response as yet. I'll keep you posted and maybe you can suggest the right profile. Thanks!

try a wider lobe seperation. I think my .479/.479 lift 292/292 dur 222/222@.50" dur on a 114 lobe seperation pulls hard off idle holds 16" vac without the rings broke in on a 10.2:1 401 right now and spins to 6000-6500 easily, also have the same cam in a stock 401 with a torquer intake and 750 Holley it does the same thing. I'll have to verify the vacume on that motor but between 4500-6000 it got scary in a cj5 #-o .
