I know it's not recommended, weak link, yada, yada, but will any 1974-1991 AMC 360 bolt up to a T-150? I am ditching this 258 in my 78 CJ and have found a good running 1990 Wagoneer 360. Before I go and drop the $$ I want to make sure it will bolt up without any adapters or mods, and that AMC didn't change anything in the newer motors that would not allow it to work with a T-150 in a CJ.

Yes and the T-150 is not a weak tranny!!!

i believe teh T-150 came behind 304's for a couple of years. It is not a weak tranny like MC said, but it doesnt have teh best gear ratios

t-150 were used up till 1979 in 80 they went to I think t-176 -- t-5

I had terrible luck with the T-150. My 77 CJ was a factory 304/3 speed, T-150 equipped. Between 78 when I got it and 88 when I upgraded to a T-18, I broke the T-150 four times. The 1st time it took out 3rd gear and the syncro. The rest of the breakage was always 2nd gear and the cluster gear. It was fairly cheap and easy to repair but not the strongest of trannies.

All of the AMC V-8s will bolt up, you just need the correct pilot bushing for the crank. They were stock in CJs from 76-79, with the T-18 being optional.

Roger that! I abondoned my 258 buildup because I won't be happy until I have a V-8. I know the T-150 is NOT the optimal tranny, but I made the mistake of getting a bench rebuild on it and my D20 this last summer so I want to get some money/use back out of it. I don't really go off-road yet, and the motor will stay stock so it won't be abused. If I wreck it, then a T-18 will follow. Better planning earlier in the project could have saved $$. I keep telling my wife that the next one will be so much cheaper and easier. She just gives me THE LOOK...... Thanks guys.

Well as for weak parts...If you pound on anything long enough or hard enough it's gonna break..The optimal gear ratio argument is valid for certain kinds of wheeling.. I have wheeled and hauled and in general used the heck out of a 84 J-10 with a "weak" T-176 trans amc 20 rear..etc (all the "wrong parts" in other words).. with a fairly warm 360 in front and havent broken anything.. Ok I got a little excited once during a drag race and managed to blast the ball off the end of the shifter and rip the whole thing out of the trans.. but hey.. Sometimes I think we overbuild these things rather than altering our technique.. (Umm perhaps substituting cubic money for common sense and restraint).

A case in point.. and old Flat fender with a whopping 60 hp and leeeetle bitty skinny tires from the factory will go anywhere you want to go..(slowly to be sure)

Are any of the fly wheels interchangeable? Will a 304 work on a 360?

Thanks

The flywheels are interchangable, but need to be balanced for the motor you're using them on. All AMC V-8s are externally balanced, so the flywheel/flexplate and harmonic are unique for the displacement of the engine. 304, 360, and 401 are each balanced differently, and should only be swapped on an engine of the same displacement. A 304 flywheel can be rebalanced to use it on a 360. If you have the 360 flywheel or flexplate, a machine shop should be able to "match balance" a different flywheel for the engine.

Check ebay or email jeepsr4ever here on the board, you can get a brand new flywheel for the correct displacement for under $125.
