can a gm hei distributor be easily modified to fit an amn 304
I found a site that says they make their hei kits from gm core distributors and they are made to fit an amc engine

Yes, easily ..no Most guys that do this use a cadillac HEI

will a gm hei work just as easily with my 304 or is the caddy dissy better

There's nothing that's a drop in. The ones I've seen were made from a GM upper housing with an AMC lower. The 2 are cut apart , the GM shaft shortened and cut for the AMC oil pump, then the AMC lower welded on and the AMC dizzy gear installed. The Caddy HEI (still GM) may be easier to machine, I've never seen one.
There are a couple of manufacturers making drop in ready HEI's for AMC. I think it was discussed here on the forum, you may want to try the search function. Seems the price was around $250-300.
