I've got a 304 in my CJ7 with an edelbrock 600CFM (#1406) carb and performer intake on it. Besides that, the engine is basically stock. Since I've owned it, the thing has been running rich. When I goose the throttle, I get a puff of black smoke and after driving the Jeep for more than 100 yards, I reek of exhaust. :drunken:

I rejetted the carb yesterday using .092 jets and .073x.047 needles - 1.5 stages lean, and really didn't see any difference.

Can anyone suggest a starting point for tuning this carb so that I won't smell so much raw fuel in the exhaust?

Thanks!

Screw the two front mixture screws on the front of the carb all the way in then work them out 1.5 turns and start there.

Today was 10 times better. It still smells like there is a little too much fuel, but going 1.5 turns out sure did make a difference. I had the screws out about 2.5 turns initally. I'm going to screw them in another half turn and see how things fly.

Muchas gracias! :t:
