torque converter question

pretty simple question, are torque converters unique to the engine or trans? im guessin tranny jus wanna be sure

A little of both. You need the correct flex plate for the engine/converter, and some have different diameter where they index into the crank, depending on application.

The converter for a TF727 is the same for AMC and Mopar, EXCEPT that the mopar version has the starter ring welded on.

Converters should be neutral balanced, so they won't affect the balance of the motor.

so when swapping a 360 into a CJ with a tf999 would i use the converter thats still attached to the 360 from when i pulled it out of the cherokee, or the one that was attached to the 258?

You need to use the one that came with the trans in your jeep.

I just realized that the torque converter for the tf999 in my CJ7 wont bolt up to the 360....soooo what do I do, can i balance the 258's flywheel and use that? i need help quick trying to get this swap done, thanks

You could have the 258 flywheel rebalanced to match the 360. I believe you can get a brand new flexplate from places like Auto Zone. I know www.oldcarparts.com has them for about $100 new.

360 from when i pulled it out of the cherokee, or the one that was attached to the 258?

if from a cherokee that could be a th-400 converter and flex plate if it is from a 70's cherokee

it is from a th400 the chero is a 77

yea thats the problem, it had a th400, this is my first swap and i'm only 17 so i can look over stuff like that pretty often lol, so i can just buy a flexplate meant for an AMC V8 and a torque flight tranny?

AMC V-8s are externally balanced so weight is added or removed from the harmonic balancer and flexplate or flywheel, the I-6 is internally balanced so the flexplate is neutral balanced. To use the I-6 flywheel you would need it balanced.

If you buy a new one made for a 360, it's usually balanced "close enough" for a daily driver. I'd have it checked for performance use (high RPM).
