I am building a 400+ hp street rod CJ7. I have an AMC 20 rear now but that wont hold up for long behind this motor. What are some good alternatives for swapping a junkyard axle into this rig. I want to keep it at the factory widetrack width so I know I will have to have it narrowed.

Chevy axles?
ford 9 ?
ford 8?
Dana?

Any tips on where to find them or links to writeups would be great.

Thanks in advance
Dave

I'm going to be different. I'll suggest a ligher weight axle that has the potential to handle huge power on the street just fine.

Go with the Ford 9". :t:

Just make sure you get one with at least 31 spline axle shafts to handle the power better. 35 spline aftermarket shafts (with the corresponding change in center diff) are even better.

Does anyone know where to get one and off what vehichle to get 31 splines?

I know that some are tapered, but can you narrow them to CJ7 widetrack width or do you have to buy the axle just for the housing and then narrow it & get custom axles?

Anyone ever put a 9" into a widetrack CJ7 before and still maintained the CJ factory width?-----or within a inch?

I am sorry for all the stupid ?? but I just need to know where to go, what to buy and then I can do what needs to be done........oh, and I am trying not to break the bank.....my engine builder needs some money 8)

Thanks in advance for everyones help, any writeups you know of would be great.

You might try to find a 9" out of an early Bronco (67-76). They are very close to Jeep widetrack and have the right lug pattern. Not sure on the spline count though. The only complaint I have about the 9" is that the pinion is about 1.5-2" lower than a Dana axle, so it increases your driveshaft angles.

I'd go to a 35 spline Dana 60. Do it once and be done with it.

just go narrow track get the back rear out of a 73 - 75 cj dane 44 flange axel 30 spline and get moser to make you axels for it holding up for me with 5:13 gears 37" swamper and hit 12.6 in the 1/4 mile

The 66-77 bronco axels are only 28 spline vs 31spline of the 1/2 truck stuff. The bronco housing is not as strong as the 1/2 ton also. Not that it can't be beefed, but it is still wider than your 7(there closer to the YJ,TJ width).
If you do go with the 9", stop at the local race shop a see what they get for a housing made to your width, or a complete full floater, disk brakes, locker/spool, gears and 40 spline shafts. :t:

I know everybody is saying 9" but I will say something different. D60. The 9" is awsome no doupt, seen a few biult from ground up and they are hard to beat but they are getting expensive. D60 are cheaper and way more of them.

i'm pretty sure there have been way more 9"s made than 60s. fwiw, a rear 9" can be built from with all new (yep, even the housing) for around a grand.
