oil movement issue

I'm gonna show my ignorance here, but I am finding it hard to locate info.
In order to check oil pump clearances, do I need to remove the timing cover, or can it be checked by simply removing the filter adapter.
Also, how exactly are the clearances checked? Is there an article or write up anywhere that can be used for reference. I am working on a Jeep and have a FSM, but the details about the oil system is sketchy at best.

the FSM should have the clearances in it in the V-8 engine section

You can just remove the filter adapter. Clearances are checked between the pump gears and housing, and also how much the gears protrude past the housing. This is why the correct thickness gasket is needed for the adapter.
