There MAY be a single digit or 2 digit number cast in the lifter galley or on the heads (not all were cast with them). The 401 was only built 71-78 so the digit 1-8 would be the last digit of the year.

All 401 blocks are the same, so the year really doesn't matter. An early 71 may have the high compression heads with 291C casting #, and 71-72 had a flat flange on the back of the crank, 73 up were stepped. 71-73 heads have chevy style rockers, 74 up are bridged. These will offer some clues to the year.

THANKS BOB. I RECENTLY PICKED UP 2 401'S. ONE IS A 73 WITH CHEVY STYLE ROCKERS, THE OTHER IS A 74 WITH THE BRIDGED STYLE.

LUCKY FOR ME THE 73 IS STANDARD BORE THAT IS STILL USABLE WITHOUT BORING, THE OTHER S ALREADY .030 OVER AND NEEDS 2 SLEEVES.

BOTH CRANKS ARE ONLY .010 ROD AND MAINS.
