Turbo charging is the way to go for power - unless you want Old School lumpy cam lope for the 'Sex' of it - which I like too.

Stans Headers might make some for you -
but most home built use the factory cast headers which will last & run the exhaust up and forward - Turbo in battery box area - relocate the battery - flange the 14 gauge pipe & mount the Turbo > plumb to carb / EFi Throttle Body with Alum. tube-ing.

EFi conversion is the only way to control Fuel - engine 'events':
Use a Offenhauser single plane or Torker intake for the conversion. Weld on Alum 'bungs' - check VW for their screw in type - or - thick alum. rod - weld on & drill to size for injector body.
Hit the back of the Intake valve @ 43 degree angle with Injector spray for best results.
use a Pontiac Turbo Sunbird ECm > $15.00 - $40.00 from www.car-parts.com > ask MIKE V on jyturbo about pinning it for 8 cylinders > plenty info on the .net for # 1227749 ECM on how to do this & mod a harness.
The parts are there and cheap once you know what to shop for.
Cast pistons > limit boost to 6lbs. - Inter cooler,use one .
I'd ARP everything and run a Turbo cam > stronger valve springs / new locks & keepers.
Full House 500 to 1000 HP ?
Over 500HP use a 390 / 401 forged crankshaft.
Can't say how the 304 - 360 lower end will act above 500HP -
but a 304 block will have super strong cylinder walls.
Forged Rods / Forged Turbo Pistons / Turbo Cam / Oiling Mods / ARP everything / O-ring heads - interlock - block / copper head gaskets / maybe extra head studs / Inter cooler / separate oiling system with cooler for Turbo / Laptop computer / EFi / maybe Iconel valves from Manley / Total Seal rings / cam anti - walk kit > see Nick Alfano .
8 to 8.5 to 1 forged > around town by spinning down boost controller instead of having a 'Twitchy' Hi-Comp cammed motor in traffic -
spend on head work beyond Turbo valves / springs / O-rings / seals / valve seating > not needed.
No need to spin past 6K. > stupid power that comes on like nothing you've experienced with NA engines - flat torque curve - it's addicting.
