Tomorow I will be picking up my 460 ford from the machine shop, and hope to have it together and running before new years.

:!: YAY!!! :!:

This is going to be my first ever new/freshly rebuilt motor, and want to make sure that I do everything right.

As people who have built many motors in the past, I need advice on what oil/filters are the best, what breaking in techniques work best etc...

Thanks everybody!

Congrats!

You will want to prime your engine before you do anything and run a new filter. Ford has a much better filter setup than AMC does in stock form. You are safe to run just about any filter you want but I would run the better filters like Wix..ect. Prime it with a tool after you get it timed (using the manual method @TDC). Move the timing to about 10 degrees and make sure everything is buttoned up. Start the motor and keep the throttle at 2000rpm+ for at least 10mns. Make sure you have two people there, one to hold the throttle down and the other to watch for leaks/fires. You should run some 10w30-14w40 for break in and make sure not to use synthetic oil for break in. After the first 500 miles or two weeks change your oil and filter (you can now use some synthetic oil).

the oil you should use is castrol or valvoline 10-30.
do not use quaker state or penzoil as they are not the cleanest oils out there. besides you want your new 460 to last a long
time. tore too many engines apart and engines that ran
quaker state or penzoil were all full of sludge even though
the owners changed their oil and the 2500 to 3000 mile mark.
my dad overhauled his 1988 olds 98's 3.8 buick v-6 and
you still could see all the numbers and no sludge at all as he
uses castrol 10-30.the engine had 375000 miles on it and
lost 10psi of oil pressure since new.that was his excuse to mom for rebuilding the engine.

use a good diesel oil, they have a better additive package that will help your engine break in. the extra zinc phosphate in the diesel oil will keep your cam from going flat. I recommend rotella T 10-30 and a good oil filter

never thought of that. will it work for normal use in a 454
hardin marine engine in my 78 full time 4x4 suburban?

- i guess Rotella T 15w40 is okay to use also ? $10/gal

-- and a NAPA Gold Long Oil Filter #1049

What ? .... your 1st new motor is a PHORD !

shame on you !

ah well, at least it;s a big block 460.

Phord small blocks are small,
1 inch shorter block deck hieght than AMC & SBC
around 8 inches rather than around 9 inches.

15-40 should be fine i just prefer 10-30 as it can get a little chilly in the great white north and 15-40 gets a little thick in the morning
