I just finished swapping out a 258 for a 304 and its one of the best mods I,ve ever done. I have a system of rock trails in the Canadian Shield about 80 miles from my house. I always fill up at home then top up at a gas station about 50 miles out and use it as a kind of benchmark to check my engine performance. With the 6 the best cost was $17 and thats at 85cents/liter. Yesterday with gas running 90cents/liter it only cost me $15.61. The 304 sounds better and has just enough extra power and and torque to go down the highway comfortably at 65 mph. Oh, I run an 84 CJ7 with 35 BFG,s and 4.10 gears and a TF 904/999 combo.

my CJ originally started out with a 4-banger. Dropped a 4.2 in a few years later, and more recently upgraded to a 401......shoulda done that the first time!
V8 power is just the way to go :t:

It,s ok, I ran it for 4 years behind the six and basically it self destructed. So I used a case from a 904 that was behind an 8 and had the 3 bands and swapped the lower 999 gears into it. I also bought a Lokar kickdown cable after finding out that the TF trannies have to have the kickdown hooked up and working. It is nice on the trail but I have no illusions about the longtime durability.

I am in the process of swapping a built 401 into my 1980 Chief in place of stock 360.

i cant agree more with cjim7 i had a 258.. did a clifford 4.0 head upgrade. That gave a bunch more power and the 360 is even more. and i like it much better

Ive had the 360 with the t-177. Very nice combo. But the gears were only 3.54 and BFG 33". Needed the extra low gear just for that.
But it really scooted. Didn't get much on gas milage though, but then again I drove it with my foot in the 4 bbl. 120mph on the highway is a realy great rush.

I'm not sure If I would've swaped the 258 for the 304... I would've rather went with the 4.0 or spent the money for a rebuild on the 258 with a 4.0 head.. fuel injection etc... I dump the 304 and went with a 360 that's built pretty well.
