Thought I would post this up as it is fairly complete and may help others organize their engine projects. Note that this build incorporates the Edelbrock MPEFI kit wich includes a distributor, fuel pump, and other items not listed seperately below.

I laid the list out in an Excel spreadsheet with costs (not included below) to keep track of everything.

Once heads are done I will need to aquire the last 2200 worth of the parts on the list to finish up - so get ready MC cuz most of those remaining parts will be coming from you!

BTW,

I also had my 390 machine work done at the same time. What a financial mistake that was. I always seem to bite off more than I really want to chew at the same time.

For now the 390 is on hold until I get my Jeep runnin.

Here' my 401 block on the stand. Note the lack of a Valley Bypass Line LOL! That's my 82Waggy chassis behind the block, freshly stripped and painted - waiting to put on 4" springs and install new gears with a Power Lok diff in the back before I paint the suspension stuff.

Pretty .9272" pin bushing with .0007" fit. No bushing oiling holes used - they just show the rod where to crack! :shock:

very nice indeed. i too am building a pro flo 401. i just got done tearing the old girl down, and have already purchased my mpefi (pace), thats actually how i found your post, someone directed me to your post because i was looking for a build list, wah lah, here i am. Thats truly a impressive list, what type of numbers are u trying to achieve? i am trying to reign in about 400 ponies and even more in torque. im still researching different options/combos. what were u going for, as far as usage? street, offroad, both, leaning further one way than the other? i look forward to hearing how yours turns out and any imfo. you might share. until then good luck.

buy a ring filer for the top rings you will need a .027 ring gap

Somewhere in the forum is a dyno sheet for a 401 that made over 420 ft bs at 3400 and about 350hp at around 4400, as I recall. This engine used a comp X260 cam, a 670 Holley carb, performer manifold, Edelbrock heads, and about 9:1cr with speed pro pistons.

I'm doing some extensive work on stock AMC 090 head castings, using a cam with a little more lift and tighter hydraulic intensity that should grind out some additional torque, the MPEFI of course, and probably a little better quench than the dyno motor. Should make at least the same if not slightly better numbers. I'm shooting for best torque at a lower rpm and do not expect much over 350 peak hp.

Just received my Rollmaster timing set today and have everything else I need on the way from Bulltear to finish the engine. Tranny and Txfr case are done. Also have my 4" lift kit, new diff gears, and other miscellaneous stuff on the way from BJ's to finish the chassis - and the body man is finally hard at work. Should be running in July, knock on wood. Now I just need to pick a body color and get on with it.

Very nice plan.

That would be me with the dyno'd 401. It is in a 89 GW and I am very pleased with the performance.

I actually have another 401 at the machine shop now with the KB pistons and AMC steel heads with some work being done. I thiink it will make more power and torque than the last bulld with the stock pistons and Eddy heads.

Where did you get "Pan Gasket, 1pc Rubber SCE?" Did not know you could get a one piece pan gasket for an AMC.

Managed to misunderstand the timing marks on the Rollmaster and installed it a few teeth off. It has 4 advanced and 4 retard settings, requiring that you choose an appropriate crank keyway and then match the appropriate unmarked tooth to the timing mark on the cam sprocket. Trying to get a 108 centerline and the Rollmaster indexing sheet sucks. Recognized it was wrong and now have to pull it off again.

Where did you get "Pan Gasket, 1pc Rubber SCE?" Did not know you could get a one piece pan gasket for an AMC.

Not sure I have. I don't beleive the listing I ordered it from - we'll see what actually arrives.

Update 05/19/07: Nope. 1pc pan gasket not available. Got SCE 4pc set.

Got side tracked with a 68 427 Vette, but I just dug out the FSJ a couple of weeks ago to get back on it again.

No Dyno news on the engine. Been on back burner for a couple of years.

9.0:1 CR with engle k5054, performer, ported manifolds and mildly ported heads ..... GM TBI married to a T18 in a CJ7 with 35's and 4.56 gears....... HP makes heat ya know.

I look forward to your final results and hope you get the back burner fired back up. I would have ground to a halt to. I saw your posting of the vette when you bought it. nice clean CA rig

OK,

So I just got a PM about my project and it got me somewhat motivated again to un-bury it from the stack of crap piled up on it in my garage.

So here is an update:

Body man crapped out on me a while back but he did finish the doors, tailgate, and fenders through primer - and I finished making the mods to the front valence for the rhino grill and headlights. Drug all the stuff home to the barn a couple of weeks ago only to have the weather go sour on me.

The engine is done and mounted onto the restored chassis with the tranny. Chassis has been stripped and coated with POR15 and has the new 4" springs and shocks. I have all new body mounts, disck brake conversion parts, Power Lock diff for the rear and new gears, floor shifter, blah blah blah.

Basically one big pile of dusty cash that needs renewed enthusiasm.

So you guys need to help me get motivated again.

I basically need to get the main body up to snuff and start assembling for final paint. Ugh!

Geez, it has been a while since I messed with all of this Jeep stuff.

I'm currently finishing up a Mercruiser SBC 383 for my 23' Mako CC boat and really need to pull the 427 tri-power outa my vette for rework before it blows up - it is 42 years old after all! (That is really next on my list for engine work).

So I'm thinking i'll get back on the jeep in early spring.

So keep me in the loop!
