Someone explain to me how my 2000 wrangler that has no distributor and is all computer controlled can be friggen detonating..??? I thought that was the point of all this computer stuff. I can be motoring along at part throttle and then I realize that I'm hearing this thing pinging away.. dont they have knock sensors and stuff??

(I mean damn it's a straight 6 not a 12:1 race motor.?? WTF?)

I wonder if your crank sensor is bad.

I looked in our cataloging and did not find a knock sensor listed(4.0l). That being said I would have to guess

1. cam sensor
2. crank sensor
3. pcm

well bad as I hate to admit it I guess I will be letting someone with more knowledge and or test equipment look at it.

If O2 sensor is gunny bag it can cause a lean run detonation

what mods have you done to the rig?

nothing has been done as far as drivetrain. pretty much bone stock with 98000 miles.. I have a new set of plugs.. but havent changed them.. (much to my surprise there is a rail with coils bolted on the top of the plugs..) I am still working up to this.. what the hell is wrong with good ol plug wires and a distributor??

No check engine light? :-|

That thing is new enough that it will throw a light up if the gas cap isn't screwed on tight enough, so the computer should give you some kind of answer.

6 Coils that are directly connected to each plug is better than 1 coil connected to 6 plugs. The computer controls the firing of each coil directly..

its nice in the fact that the computer can really directly control the advance of the engine a lot closer with less moving parts. :t:

If I could add that to my 360 I'm building I would in a hearbeat. .. then again I like simple.. simple distributor.. simple wires... simple plugs.. those coil packs cost about $110 each.. like $700 to replace coils 111!!! My friend priced them for her Toyota Corolla...

Carbon deposits can cause a rise in compression ratio. That rise in compression ratio will cause detonation if everything else stays the same. Try running some of that cleaner that is supposed to get rid of carbon deposits and see what happens.

Or try stepping up in the octane rating of the gas you use. That would also get rid of your knocking.

two common things that happen is the mass air meter goes bad and causes a lean run setting in the computer which results in the detonation or the o2 sensors either one goes gunny bag can set off a lean run. many times it wont set a code till its really bad. but pullin gth ecodes is a good idea
