the chiltons i have only lists the 304,

finally got my 360 going in my cj5, it is .040 with howell tbi and a HEi dizzy plugs gapped at .45

anyway i have a slight off idle stumble that seems to get better the more i advance the timing, i am at 12 now and may try 15, so far i dont have any pinging so i guess i am in the clear 111!!! what do you guys run your pretty much stock 360's at?

also what about altitude, does that effect anything with timing? i am at 5,300 ft above sea level.

Depends on the condition of your balancer and if it has slipped a little. Some of the factory balancers have even been off 5 degrees. Timing and carb tuning go hand in hand so tweak it until you get the best idle and best power throught the range your cam was built for and listen for pinging.

A general rule of thumb is an additional 1* per 1000 feet elevation gain, so you should be safe at 12. That's about where I ran mine when I lived in Denver.

You can try to keep advancing it a couple of degrees at a time until you get a ping at WOT under load, then back off a couple. It might also get hard to start when hot if you advance it too much.

hmm 360 in cj5.. ping at WOT, ok I wanna see how much attention you have left over to focus on listening for pinging once you achieve right foot on floor..me Im hanging on an grinning like a fool.. course I have been accused of wanting to live too much too.

WOT under load. Meaning about 40-50 MPH in high gear (depends on gears), you want to lug it a bit, then mash foot down and listen for ping.

With a loud exhaust, it probably won't work, but it is a fairly decent tuning trick if you can hear the engine.

what exactly does pinging sound like i get a noise that sounds like tapping fingernails on my rollbar as i go down the highway, but i could also be the top hitting the spreaders on the top.

Sounds like one of them infernal noisy diesel engines. Rattlely (if that's a word)?
