Well again like the Orphans we AMCers are .........
You just can't call up Mr Jegs or Mr Summit or even Mr Bulltear and say send me a midplate. So the material was delivered yesterday and I started cutting to make a midplate. Material is .187 thick 4130 normalized.
I'm using the original backing plate as a pattern.

How much thicker is that metal than the stock piece? Will that affect your start teeth meshing correctly? Anywho, lookin' good!!!

This is .187 thick and the stock piece is .090 thousanths. So to answer your question .090 thousanths. If I need to I can mill the starter area down. I'll know that when I assemble.
Well it's done after a couple hours.

Why?

If you have a stock piece, why make a new one? Or did I miss something somewhere?

im im looking at it right, he is replacing the stock with this one which will give a diffent mounting position (stronger?) along with the factory mounts im guessing, the midplate acts also as an engine mount

it will keep the motor from moving and put more power to the ground

Yep, it's not just a direct copy of the OEM one. Note the two extensions sticking out to the sides.

Plus you can pull the tranny and t case without supporting the engine. And not snap the tranny case in half.

Yep the way I made the chassis the extensions on the plate will mount to my bottom front 4 link brackets.

Do you just bolt it solid, or use some kind of rubber/poly isolaters in the mix?

And Fuzz don't need no more power, don't send him the plans!

I all ready have 3 of the factory plates to use as templates was thing about mid plate and solid motor mounts

I have a set of solid mounts sitting at mc's shop. They came from a.j. jacobs, I'll sell them to you for whatever aj sells them for + shipping.

The midplate is mounted solid. Bolted to the frame mounts.

From what I hear Fuzz is gonna need maybe a front plate too.

I would open the hole in the center so you can get your flywheel through it so you can pull the engine without pulling the trans.

Don't see why the hole would need to be opened to pull the engine. The only nice thing about the cutout in the OEM one is when a couple dummies forget to put the plate inbetween the engine and tranny, you can work it in without pulling the engine completely away...like we did when we put the 401 in, the first time. Hopefully we'll remember this next time.

In my car and most cars I have seen with engine plates you can not pull the engine with the mid plate attached so you have to be able to get the flywheel through the mid plate.
or pull the trans and remove the flywheel.

Rethinking this, you are right. The flywheel/flex plate won't fit thru the hole in the OEM one. The OEM plate comes out along with the engine when you pull the engine. With a midplate that is attached to the frame, that can't happen. Sorry, my mistake.

So to bring this thread back from the dead and update.....
Rad had a neat plate idea and I'm going to intergrate it in the second plate.

On of the things you get to do again, is when the thickness of the Mondello flywheel wasn't figured in during the mockup stage.
OOOOOOpps

One thing I never gave a thought to was the Mondello flywheel/Torque Converter verses the stock flexplate/torque converter overall length.

I thought that with the increased thickness (3/16") of the engine midplate shown above the TC/Flywheel clearance would be enough well it wasn't.

So I'm going to make a second plate out of the same material and make the center hole diameter big enough to get the Torque Converter/flywheel out and still keep the original plate with the engine.

Actually this will be a strong sucker being a final sandwiched thickness of 3/8" thick.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/July142007005.jpg

And I had to move the engine foward 1/4" as I couldn't move the tranny/transfercase back as my four link mount is 1/8" from the rear of the transfercase.

Good thing the MORE engine mounts can be easily modified.

(BTW some of you may notice the right side of the frame mount has been severly modified, thats to make room/area for the "secret project" Correct MC????)

And finally the rear tranny mount has been fit, adjusted and final welded.

I have a mondello flex plate also and with a 1/4 inch mid plate and no factory plate the convertor sets just right.
