AMC 360 stock!

Did the math out today, yup 6 MPG :(:. I knew it was bad but cmon now.

Where do I start?

None of the vacuum lines are hooked up so I am goign to start there, But I dont know what year the engine is out of so Ill choose one schematic and go with it.

Next I have a HEI coming on monday so im going to install that next weekend, as well as set the timing.

I feel it idles high also, could that have anythign to do with it?

My carborater is a MC2100, I am not 100% sure though. In May I plan on going to TBI so that would fix all carborator problems. But would could I do in the mean time?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to beat somone in the face though!

Please Help

So you know that the idle is high and you don’t know what the timing is? When was it tuned last like plugs, wires, cap/rotor, air filter. Then lets move on to compression is a hole week or dead, what cam you using, intake, headers, trany, rear gears and tire size & pressure. Is this hiway, town driving, trail or all?
Could it be your driving stile?
We (or I do) need more info. to help you out.

Yes, it sounds like it is idleing very high and I am unsure what the timing is set at.

I bought the Jeep in May 2005 and have not replaced the cap/rotor or wires, nor has it been tuned. I have replaced the plugs, air filter, and fuel filter, since I bought it.

The HEI is supposed to be here on monday and I plan on doing a tune up next weekend.

Im not sure on compression, cam, intake or gears for that matter. I know it is stock, stock cam-intake-exhaust mainifolds-axles/gears.

My Tranny is a T-176

I am running 33 12.5s at full pressure.

This is Highway, and Town that is all.

I am a very conservative driver, slow starts at stopsigns and lights and 65 max in the highway usually 60 mph.

I'd bet that when you get your vacum lines right, and get your timing set properly, you should notice a huge increase (percentage wise) in fuel mileage.

Don't forget to make sure your carb is in tune to the changes in ignition and timing. That'll make a big difference too.

OK we got more info. now. What year, model Jeep may help us on the gears.
Me thinking with every thing being stock and running 33’s the motor is turning below it’s sweet spot.
Oh when you put 33’s on was the speedo calibrated for 33” tall of a tire, stock is what 28” to 31”
You can see if it is off by finding a measured mile this could be why the 8 MPG

You should only post in one section for a question.

8 mpg HAHA I said 6 mpg

Its an 85 CJ7.
I have not recalibrated the Speedo. I know I dont go over 65 because 35 on the speedo = 65. I love my GPS

How would the speedo not showing the correct speed hinder gas milage?

How would the speedo not showing the correct speed hinder gas milage? If the speed is off then the milage is off too #-o
Now Bulltear said HEI will boost MPG it may 1 may be 2 at the most but I cant see it.

There is a large port on the front??? of the carb on the lower part that needs to be hooked up to something or plugged. I plugged mine and it idled down to where it's supposed to be. It looked like a copper line I believe.

Wow Feel free to bash me.

I mapquested my travels over the past two days.

Haverhill to Andover 16 Miles
Andover to Haverhill 16 Miles
Haverhill to Work 19 Miles
Work to Haverhill 19 Miles

= 70 Miles / 5.5 Gallons of gas

= 12.72 Miles per gallon
:!: =D> :!:

Thank you FuzzFace2
And im sorry for wasting all of your time!

I just looked at the numbers and didnt think it out.

Now im curious what the HEI and Vacuum hookups will give me!

No bashing needed it happens to all of us sooner or later.

But you should be able to get 15 out of that rig pretty easy. I would say keep working on it.!! :t:

Congrats on the MPG increase. I wish I would get that and I got the I6 258. I am planning to switch to 4.0 FI this month.
Get the vacuum lines hooked up. You will see an increase in performance and MPG.
I got the FSM's if you need them. I think I could put up a pic of your year for you to download.

Thats my problem, I have no clue.

Is there any way I can find out?

I found this stamp in the Intake manifold just behind the carb :

3233312
AM 16
87C

It looks like a stock manifold.
and
I know about the tags on the valve covers but who knows if they are the originals but I cant read the tag anyways.

Help any?

Ok, with that information one should be able to tell what year motor it was. I however do not. Hopefully someone will chime in here and let me know the year. From that, I can get the FSM and scan in the page you need.

Well as nobody here seems to know about that engine.
I will post up an image off a 79. :t: (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/lost-one/misc/vacuum360.jpg)
I know it says auto but I couldn't find one from a manual in 360.
It should work for your application.
The link is in the dude, if you didn't figure it out.

With that carb I would bet the power valve is shot and the vacuum adjance unit is leaking. Do the basics and you should be getting at least 14 highway
