Does the scout D20 have 4L N 4H 2H like the D300? I ask because a friend has a 71 scout II with a 3spd tranny and a t-case with this pattern I thought that the D300 had this pattern and was only used in 1980. Or is there a possibility that a 71 might have a D300

The Dana 300 is 1980 Scout ONLY. It could have a 300 if someone swapped it in. Factory, they were only behind a T-18 or auto tranny though. Shift patterns (and even the levers) are the same on both. The easy way to tell is the 300 pan is nearly flat, the 20 pan is raised about 1" all the way around. It's easy to spot a 1980 Scout, they were the only ones with square headlights.

I'm running a Scout 300 in my CJ, and it was a bear to find 10 years ago, I can imagine how hard it might be now. The bullgear (goes on the back of the tranny), is made from un-obtainium, so even if you have a Scout 300, it's useless without the bullgear. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do the Terra-Low 3.15 gears in my 20 for about the same price. They weren't available when I got the 300.

so the shifter and pattern were the same on the scout 20's and 300's?

Yep, the shifters are the same on the Scout 20 and 300 but the shift pattern is opposite a CJ model 20 because of the way the linkage attaches. I still have the Scout shifter off my 300 somewhere. I did a twin stick on mine, the only way to go.
