Just saw in another post that 82Waggy is having trouble getting the RollMaster timing set set up right. I AM TOO! The instructions are pretty lame.

Here's the way we installed it hoping to have it straight up:
crank key in the keyway with the dot
lined crank gear up with "the other dot" at 12 o'clock
lined cam gear up with it's dot at 6 o'clock

When I tried to degree the cam, it seems way off, but I am having issues trying to degree with the heads on and hydraulic lifters. I'm going to turn an old hydraulic lifter into a solid first chance I get and check it again, but that won't happen until next weekend.

Here's a pic showing the various dots on the gears. They aren't aligned in any particular way in the pic, just the way they came out of the box.

The way I'm interpretting the instructions is you put the crank key in the keyway you want, then line the dot on the cam gear up with the tooth on the crank gear that is marked to correspond with the keyway you picked, in a 6 o'clock/12 o'clock relationship. If you take note, the tooth that corresponds with the keyway is 3 teeth counter-clockwise from the keyway in all cases.

Does all this sound correct to those of you who have done it successfully?

Yes that is the way it appears

That is correct, and not what I did the first time. I knew I was wrong when I tried to line up the crank dot to the cam dot with the crank keyway on the 4 degree advanced slot (2 cam degrees) but wanted to verify. Now I have to yank it off again with a gear puller I don't have in my hands right now. Next time I'm going to barely slide on the gears and degree before seating it all the way. :(:

Mark the tooth on the crank gear you think you need with a magic marker and line up with the dot on the cam gear. At least I think that is what you are supposed to do!!!!

PS: Be sure to get all the cosmoline off the timing set.

This is where I had to install the Rollmaster straight up.
It doesn't make sense to this day, if you use the Rollmaster instructions I should be if I remember correctly 4 degrees retarded. Goofy instructions.

I've been playing with mine all afternoon. I checked the Rollmaster at four settings. Turns out my cam is already advanced about four degrees from the card in the straight up position so I'm leaving it there.

The Rollmaster keyways do result in the increments indicated, and it is alot of trouble pulling it on and off to change settings..

Well, after some consultation and double checking with better equipment I decided to reset the centerline of my cam to 106deg.

Here is what I did:

Note the long reach dial indicator.

I used another dial indicator mounted on a bridge across the #1 cylinder to find TDC, and set up my pointer on the degree wheel.

I then went to .050 either side of max lobe lift, wrote the degree wheel indications down on the wheel with a marker, calculated centerline, and double checked max lobe lift against the degree wheel indication.

I then checked the valve opening and closing events at .050 to verify. I found a slight variation in total duration at .050 than what the card showed but it was splitting hairs.

I ended up with the cam installed with the Rollmaster timing set in the 2deg retarded position in order to achieve the 106deg intake lobe centerline. Theoretically my cam should have had a 110deg intake lobe centerline if installed in the straight up position but it was in fact at 104 degrees (about 6deg advanced). Now I am set at 4deg advanced from the cam card (crank is now at 106deg instead of 110 when the intake lobe is at full lift).
