Stage one! Designing the base plate

The baseplate of B7's T-cover is made out of billet aluminum and is 1.25" thick and 12"s wide and 17"s long. Its a nice slab of aluminum. Here we can see stage one of the build and the extra arm is for supporting a chain driven dry sump oil pump that will live near the oil pan on his super charged 401. You can see the extra bolt holes for the chain cover and the counterbored retaining bolts for the baseplate to cover plate. the stock oiling holes have been blocked off in this application.

Here is the first block to be machined. It is approximately 12"s by 17"s and is 1.25" thick. A spendy piece of aluminum  Chucked a sharpie into the spindle and let the machine draw the outline of the part of the aluminum. Piccasso :?: The inside line the the exact path of a 2 flute 3/4" endmill spinning at 5200rpm and 27 inches per minute.

Holes tapped and the precision dry sump hole reamed out

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/bulltear/jc7.jpg

RE_FIXTURE..If you look closely you will see the oil control grooves for a no leak condition on a soft gasket. This is the finale staging for the profile on the base plate. From here is will get a counterbore in the back and be flipped over for oil pan seal and tapped holes for the two front pan bolts.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/bulltear/jc8.jpg

Thats all for now...I know its just a tease but the best I am saving for next.

It is known for it's water parks, but apparently there must also be some hot belles in Wisconsin Dells, well, at least one anyhow, right MC?

But what a dumb name for a city! Not near as cool as our PA townes like Intercourse, Bird-in-Hand, Paradise, Blue Ball, etc. (They're real, look 'em up. As a matter of fact, they're all right there in Fuzz401's back yard, ha, ha.)

Finding accurate timing (Unlike certain import timing covers...uhumm), mapping the water pump bolt pattern and mounting surface. The stock timing cover is pinned down into location. The mighty block of aluminum on the side is heat treated cast plate (Good for this project). It measures 12"x16"x2.5"...thats 2.5"s thick! Thats a nice big chunk of aluminum  After mapping the parts we need off the stock cover then we attack the large plate at about 10,000rpm.

Design work and distributor gear oiling has lead us to a oil cup for the distributor gear. This will be a milled circle with approximately .25" clearance for the cam gear and will surround the circumferance of the gear where the distributor gear does not. This allows more oil to be in contact with the cam gear and allow for even greater loads and never a dry spell on the cam gear. By doing this we also limit the size of the cavity and the dead space in the timing cover and therefor limiting the amount of precious oil it will hold and keep from the bearings. This new timing cover will be a precourser to the next generation of Bulltear parts and the ultimate billet timing cover assembly is well on its way!

I am looking forward to your comments Jeff when you see a finished part. Then we can move onto getting that aluminum body for your CJ and possibly anodizing the whole thing :lo1l:

Yes! I had to weld up the water pump area to allow the side of the water pump to seal. I am building a fixture as I type this to put the oil pan mounting bolt holes and oring cahnnel for the oil pan seal in. The other fixture is for the distributor hole and will be done shortly. These fixtures will be used for all our new timing covers. Their is a relief that must be milled into the back for the pump and I need to plug two holes and counterbore two. Almost ready for you Jeff.

Ok here is the welding to the water pump area. I used our steel welding table to allow a flat face on the water pump mounting surface so ti would be easy to blend in.

Here I am outlining the material from the weld that must be removed with a water pump gasket. Jeff these gaskets arent as accurate as I thought!! FYI Did you know AMC originally designed the water pump and timing cover to use 2 alignment pins. You can tell a very accurate gasket from a std gasket if you see two mystery holes. These holes were for the pins that were designed to aling the pump to the timing cover. The holes are located in the two triangular outcroppings. We have a AMC engineer on the site who may chime in on these. The history behind these parts is fun to learn!!

Why such a volume of oil? I have a total of almost 10Qts...pan, lines and 2 large filters. I've thought of an accumulator but those have only 2 or 3 Qts. Is your tank used as an accumulator (kept under pressure) or just a spare volume of oil (for high angles).

Ok so I got a little work done, I decided on 2 inch diameter number 25 chain sprockets I couldn't find a supplier that sells double sprockets for 25 chain so I had to make my own.
I got the camshaft side done and the sprocket made for the Moroso Oil Pump.

Notice the fuel pump eccentric is gone foreever as the engine runs the big Aeromotive fuel pump. I had to face off the back of both the camshaft sprocket and the crank sprocket as I needed every thousandth of an inch to get everything to package correctly. At present the timing chain has 15 thousandths clearance between itself and the block.

Now that's one thing I've been thinking about for a year, to tension, or not to tension??????

To be honest I'm still not sure.

I've thought of a Nylon rub/tension strip, or a idler sprocket spring tensioned.

At this point anyone have an opinion???

Jeff

ironman_gq
04-23-2008, 02:06 PM
keep it simple like all the ATV guys have done for years and use a rub type tensioner. No bearings or wheels to wear out.

tufcj
04-23-2008, 02:45 PM
I'd opt for a rub type nylon too. Toyota used a hydraulic (worked by the engines oil pressure) rub type nylon on the 20R and 22R engines, and those things ran forever, even with serious abuse.

Bob
tufcj

Goose
04-24-2008, 01:39 AM
Will there be enough splash lubrication in that area for a sprocket type tensioner?? The rub style as the guys have pointed out have worked for years, But on a chain that long there will surely be some lateral whipping at speed.. and a sprocket would control that. It would take a very long chain run and break it into three shorter runs..

MC I NEED A NEW H2O PUMP PULLEY NOW,
with the V Belt grooves .200 thousandths further back to match the original location.

It seems somewhere along the line the new billet timing cover grew .200 thicker for the OEM which is 3 inches 320 thousanths thick (3.320") to (3.520") so now my stock OEm water pump pulley is too far foward.

So more pics, that really bothered me that I lost the ability to mount my crankshaft pickup, I figured if MC had just left material where the stock fuel pump boss was I could redrill and tap but it wasn't meant to be.......
I wasn't about to start filling material and welding as everything would end up like a pretzel, so I moved things

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/May22008002.jpg

Actually you can leave all the material between the "Arrows"

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/May22008004.jpg

MC in the future if you make this setup leave the material straight in theis area it won't hurt a thing to leave this heavy (and you could also make a "inspection hole" here also.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/May22008006.jpg

Now on to solving the dilemma

So I pulled another old cover out of the junk pile and used that for a jig.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/May22008010.jpg

This will be the new mounting location

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Blown7/May22008025.jpg

Now lastly this is how I saftied my cam gear on forever
I made a new washer .010 smaller than the counterbore for the gear.
I found two 8-32 socket head cap screws 1/2" long, I tapped two holes in the washer that line up with the keyway and oiling groove. I turned the keyway screw down to a point that engages in the keyway for 3/16" deep that keeps the washer from turning and I drilled a safety wire hole thru a 5/16 Grade 8 cap screw and saftey wired it all together, it will never come undone and I don't have to rely on Locktite.

(And it is way cool.. I cant wait to see the dyno pulls now)

I had to weld a 1 inch pipe coupling to the end of the H2O pump as the new pulley will be too close to the stock radiator clamp location, after TIG welding I brazed over the weld to close any porosity I may have had in the weld as changing the pump will be a PIA due to the tightness of the installed engine in the chassis.

Could be .........................
but I wrapped the shaft boss and seal area with wet rags while I was welding and brazing. We'll see how that went.

The lowest I can adjust the Moroso pump down to is 60 PSI at idle. Engine warm.
And I have 3/4 inch lines (-12) feeding the engine. Actually all the oil pump lines are Dash 12 . Plus I have onboard 20 quarts of oil......

Now here's a thought, ...
Jeff, you may need a replacement frame when you twist that one up -
Rich you have a 'spare' frame and (body) plus a spare D60 (soon)

see where this is going  :t:

Well this frame was one of the last custom frames Phil Matkins made and I modified for a double triangulated four link so it's manufactured out of 1/4 inch wall 2x5 box tubing with top and bottom 1/4 inch caps. That ain't never gonna twist.

Now yesterday I drove over to the landfill scales to get a total vehicle and front and rear axle weight to order the front Eibach coil over springs from Poly Performance. and this pig weighs in at 5040 Lbs with full fluids minus the nose and windsheild.

But the front and rear axle weights are within 40 pounds!
2540 verses 2500

Mudrat
09-10-2009, 05:36 AM
Well being an A&P sorta guy, I'm not surprised the weight and balance was so close. And I don't think the weight to HP ratio will be too outta whack even with a 5040 HD frame

Just an update, I've got 200 road miles on her now, many 0-130 MPH digs, (could be a higher MPH but I run out of gear on the TH400) and Oil Pressure still is rock steady at 70 PSI whether it is Idle or WOT.
No problems to report at this time other than lots of fun and I have to remember to give the Jeep wave all over again.
The Coilover/4 link drives better than any CJ I ever drove.
High speed off road does take a little getting used to for body sway can be unnerving. Even though it is planted, it feels funny (like what you see in Baja when the trophy trucks run on the asphalt at the start where the front wheel is lifted around a corner, but the truck is still balls out.
