Wow, what tire size?
How is the locker?
Did you do this with a 401?

Holy shit!! I thought the famous 35 spline was overkill. I guess the aftermarket ones are worth getting.

Could this cause more shock load to the axles? It's like running a spool so there is zero differential action. The Detroits, Lock Rites and the clutch styles will eventually unload. I realize that this might not be what you want but it sure makes turning easier on hardpack. So my question is does running welder spipers or a spool cause more axle load and thus make breaking on easier.

Spools and welded diffs are actually EASIER on the axles because they have no shock load (Detroits are most famous for that). Granted, it's a little more load on them on the highway, but my truck doesn't see anything remotely close to pavement.

The tires were barely turning. I wasn't gettin' it at all.

I think spools and welded diffs are much harder on axle shafts, not to mention the tires themselves.

ANY difference in tire diameter, even going straight down the road, the difference in distance traveled by the 2 tires has to go SOMEWHERE. It either has to scrub a tire or twist an axle shaft. If the tires have good traction, usually the shaft will twist until it overcomes traction, then the tire slips and the axle unloads, and the cycle starts again. Enough cycles, and the axle shaft fatigues and snaps. Cornering accelerates the process.

On a 36" tire, a 1/4" difference in diameter translates into nearly 1/2" difference in distance traveled PER REVOLUTION.

So even though a Detroit does cause some shock load, it's not a continuous process. I'll take my Detroit over a welded diff any day.

In any event I thought that the 35 spline Dana 60 was at the very least overkill on a light weight Jeep. I guess that aired down sticky Red label Krawlers get a lot traction. Even so the Dana 60 with te 35 spline is the spec. axle on a lot of 1 ton trucks with GVW's 5 tmes that of a Jeep. Is it possible that one of yours was tweaked in a previous life? Or were they brand new?

Anything can break. They were the stock axles from whatever E250 van.

The sheer amt of TQ these things see is a lot more than anything they'd ever see on the road.

I run a torquey 360, TF999, D300 (2.62 reduction) and 5.38 gears in the diffs. Couple that with the stickies tires out there (in 39" flavor), beadlocks, and high traction situations.....

I've seen VERY few 35-spline axles actually break at the spline. It's normally a front axle breaking at the ears.

Dan: I agree the trucks these were designed for had more steady weight loads than shock loads. Do you think that the aftermarket high strength alloy axles are unbreakable? Or is nothing unbreakable?

Aftermarket alloys are a double-edged sword. While they are incredibly strong, they are more brittle. Stock shafts are softer and have more "give" to them.

But alas, nothing is unbreakable. I've seen 5-ton rockwells broken. And I've seen 2.5Ton Rockwells broken by a 4banger toyota.

The best defense is smart driving, ability to tear apart your own junk, spares, and good friends to help you get out of the woods. :t:

So If I was going to buy aftermarket Dana 60 axles which brand would you recommend? what about the Cryogenically ( spelling) frozen ones??

For a SF axle, just go to a junkyard.

For FF, get Yukon full chromos. They're cheap. Do you currently work with a good shop?

No I don't work in a shop. I do all my own work on the weekends.

It took some serious work to get the c-clips out, and here's what I have. The carrier has some roughed up edges, and some of the splines got some damage. I just couldn't the correct light and focus for you to see them well.
