Brien,

Seems that all reciprocating engines oil the rod bearings via the main bearings. Jeeps 4Ever suggested that cross drilling allowed more oil to the rods and this deprived the mains. It seems that rods #2,4,6,8 are hung out to dry in the factory set-up. J4E mentions that opening up the main feeds and improvements to oil pump etc. would increase volume enough to make everybody happy with cross drilling.

By boring out the crank throws - rod journals - you remove excess weight - you also create perfect 'Oil Reservoirs' - .

8)

We need 'caps' that will seal the ends off - allowing the 'Oil Reservoirs' to fill - providing extra oiling to take up the feed 'slack time' for rod bearings # 2, 4, 6, 8.

This will also provide enough time for engine shut down / diagnosis - rather than having to start over with a rebuild
should you experience pump failure - broken oil cooler / lines.

Place a pressure sensor / Ign. kill switch in the system - you're good to go.

Simple domed caps are what's needed for this Modification. :t:

If they had a threaded lip which didn't require deep threads to be carved into the crank throw bores - then stress risers would be kept to minimum - however - plain lip'd installed interference fit with Red Locktite might be a better choice. :-|

I would think that during a long shut down the oil would seep out through the bearing clearances and then the next time you start the engine up you wouldn't have pressure until the 'Oil Reservoirs' are full again. Bye bye bearings!! #-o

Not to mention that ten gallons of oil sitting there isn't going to do any good unless its under pressure.

Adding places for internal oil leaks are never good also. Maybe impossible to balance a crank or a crank to stay in balance with a 'Oil Reservoir' in the crank throw.

Moroso sells a oil accumulator that does the very thing you want. http://www.lingenfelter.com/store/mor23900.html
