Do AMC V-8 engines have serial numbers on them??I'm not talking about the "401" cast into the block on the side. I mean individual numbers that identify the year made, lot # , vehicle application info , etc.

NOPE. All you get is a casting number on the tranny flange, the displacement on the side, and MAYBE the last digit or two of the year cast into the lifter valley.

Most of the engines were built the same for car, truck, or SUV, the only difference being the cam if it was 2bbl or 4bbl.

NOPE. and MAYBE the last digit or two of the year cast into the lifter valley.

Unfortunately, that is what I thought.

Question:So your saying... If I take off the valve cover, I should look for a raise casting mark on the head that is two digits. If the mark is "77" then the head was cast in 1977, therefore the engine was PROBABLY built in 1977 too., Right??

Heads may not be original.

Like 73hornut said, that's the year of the head, but it may not be original. You'll need to pull the intake and look for a similar casting mark down in the lifter area. Given that the 401 was built until 78, it could be right.
