Hey guys. I'm about to open the engine up to put in matched cam/dizzy gears and timing gears. While I was at it, I thought might be a good time for cam swap. I have a .30 over 360/727 in a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 3.31 gears. The intake setup is a MegaSquirt controlled GM TBI (EFI) on a Edelbrock Performer intake. The throttlebody has been ported and the intake runners have been cleaned up (just removed flashing and irregularities). I would like great torque from 1500-3500 as this is a DD and can cruise on the highway from 2500-4000.

I've been ready over the past couple days about the Summit K8600, but I'm worried about quality and all the horror stories. The Isky 256/262 and 262 also look interesting and I've heard Isky makes quality stuff. I'm just worried that I'm losing a bit to these Isky cams. The Isky is a little more expensive too, but would be worth it if it doesn't flatten immediately. Let me know what your experience with these have been. Thanks!

I don't know about Isky cams, but I used a Reed cam in my 401. Great cam and no problems! They do custom grinds and all their cores are American made. I just talked to them about a 6 cylinder cam for my 4.0 stroker that I am going to build. The price is a little higher, but I am willing to pay a little more for American made quality. They said that they haven't had any problems with their cams flattening out, and that some of the other bigger name cam manufacturers are using China cores. used a herbert cam in a 72 jav with the 401. no worries after 120,000 miles. the jav belongs to my aunt

This herbert cam looks interesting:

RPM Range 1000-5000;
Lift .450/.475;
Advertised Dur. 265/275
Lobe 110

Any comments about that cam?

The REED TM264/TM272 also looks like it could meet the requirements.

Looks like I want a Lobe seperation at about 110-112 for mileage/torque. I'm figuring 260/270 duration. How much lift should I be looking for?

Reed will grinde a 112 center if you want. You can also pick any intake /exhaust combo from their numbers, to what ever you need.

When I called about my 401 I told them what I was looking for, picked my intake and exhaust and lobe seperation, and they ground 3 degree advance into the cam. They will also help you choose a profile. Great guys!

It has been a few years since I built my 401, but when I was talking with Reed cams, they suggested using more lift/duration on the exhaust with an AMC V8.
It think (my opinion) some cam manufactures will grind their cams like a SBC, but you can get a little more aggresive with the valve opening and closing faster with an Amc because of the lifter diameter being larger.
