Building a hot street 401 with 10.5:1 static compression, forged pistons, ported 090 heads.

Do AMC's run better with split durration cams or matched duration cams (like Comp Magnum)?

In my Chevy motors, matched duration cams SOUNDED better, but split duration ran stronger, same thing in my Oldsmobile motors.

Have your heads flowed then use those numbers for your cam. You will be much better off than just picking a cam off the shelf.

I've always used split duration & lift cams will good luck.

Crower makes some good cams. Also for a cheaper cam there is Berry racing cams in Lester Prairie, MN.

I'm running a split Crower cam (#45243) in my 390 (10.1 pistons, ported/polished 291C heads). So far I'm pretty impressed with it.

Mine is a 284/290 duration, .512/.525 lift.

Cam intake and exhaust duration and lift can be a direct expression of head flow characteristics. You can build the cam around the heads or vice versa. What you want is that magical 92% efficiency between intake and exhaust to maximize power. I believe that 92% covers all RPM ranges however I may be wrong. Siamese lift and duration numbers just wont cut it for me.
