Has anyone here used Mobil 1 in the 15W-50 flavor? What's the deal with it? Wouldn't it be a bit thick?

if its the synthetic, they are one of the few companies whos synthetic oil is actually synthetic instead of a very highly refined group III oil. and NASCAR uses it.

The W in the rating is the "winter" or cold rating. A 15W50 would be no thicker than 15 weight oil when cold, no thinner than 50 when hot. Being that synthetics generally have better flow characteristics, it probably wouldn't be a bad choice in an older motor.

I run a 10W40 dino oil in my AMX and CJ year around. I do run a 20W50 synthetic (Amsoil) in my motorcycle, but it doesn't see temps below 40 degrees.

Would it be good for 72 AMC360? I saw the AMC oil is 15W-40, but who actually makes that flavor in a non-diesel blend?

I think royal purple makes it

I have run that oil for awhile in my 401 but now I've switched to a 10w 40 blend. Alittle lighter oil, got oil pressure alttle quicker at start up.
As far as synthetic oil, I am completely sold on them. I've seen idle pressures increase with synthetic, more stable and higher hot idle pressures.
I have a 3.1L Chevy with over 250,000 miles(before I got hit in the side) that I changed twice a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall. averaged 15,000 to 22,000 a year. This motor still ran like a top, had power and was still quite.

Someday I want to take that motor apart to look at the bearings and rings.

Now my 401, which is driven like I stole it :lo1l: sees its oil changed once a year maybe. But I don't drive that one much at 10mpg Prem gas :(:  I also have a bigger sump and dual filters WITH those filter mag things on each. Total of around 9qts then I add 2 bottles of crane cam break-in lube. A little over kill probably...but its cheaper than to rebuild again do to an oil issue. :t:

That being said I think unless you are really pushing the power or want to run extended drain(with reasonable filter only change) synthic isn't worth the price. Dino oil is a hundred times better than it was 15 years ago. I also believe the 3000 mile oil change for cars is to often, but no one is really pushing it very hard.

My oil is changed yearly if I can help it. It's in a propane-fired trail rig that sees *maybe* 25 days of running all year. Propane burns super clean as well. I get into a lot of really steep climbs and off camber stuff (with the Jeep practically on its side). I need all the help I can get with oil.
