What would be the worst case if someone left out the spacer between the engine and tranny?
360 egine tf727 tranny.

depends how thick the spacer is supposed to be. if its just the sheetmetal plate that holds the inspection cover there might not be any problems but if its thicker the input shaft will bottom out in the crank/torque converter, the bellhousing could be warped or bent or possibly even crack when the bolts are tightened, the extra pressure might force the pump in front of the tranny into the case and destroy the tranny, lock up the tranny.

Even with the thin plate missing, I've seen problems with starter engagement with the flywheel/flexplate. It all depends on machining tolerances when everything was built.
