Looking at some two door '99 Cherokees that a dealer bought from a state patrol or police fleet. The dealer has 3 or 4 two doors and a bunch of 4 doors, I'd like to get one of the 2 doors. All of the 2 doors have about 120,000 to 130,000 miles on them they are cleaned up fairly nice... 4 liter inlines, auto trans, air, hand crank windows, not sure of tranfer case... basic fleet vehicle.

What should I be looking for in the way of common problems or troubles in the Cherokee with this many miles? What do you think would be a fair price to pay?Any help would be appeciated .

They all will have the AW4 tranny. Check the fluid to see if it's brown or discolored. The 4.0 and AW4 combo is a very good one for sure and will run 200K with no whimpers. What are they on blue book?

Check for cracks on the frame where the steering gearbox bolts to it. Very common problem on all Cherokees. Aside from that, just general looking things over. Check tie rods and ball joints for wear, etc. I'd recommend getting a 4 door over a 2 door as some aftermarket parts for Cherokees fit only the 4 door models. The standard tranny in some 99's and both years after that was the NV3550 which is a great piece of kit. Great truck, I put mine through hell and back and it's still running.

the police package is a rare one for cherokees. they're rated up to 140 mph. :lo1l:
