can a 360 be turned into a 401 with machine work and parts, or are the blocks completely different?

Blocks are physically the same but were machined differently. They have different cranks and rods. I'm sure it could be done with a different stroke but simply plugging a 401 Crank in a 360 won't do it.

360 has a 4.080 Bore and I don't think its got the meat to be bored to the 401 bore.. maybe with some block fill but it would be easier to find a 401.

Also read the stroker cranks thread.. its right up the ally your asking. Others with more knowledge will chime in.

Welcome to Bulltear!

The 401 blocks have a bore/stroke of 4.165/3.68" and have thicker webbing between the mains. The 360 is 4.08/3.44". SOME early 360 blocks can be bored the .085" required for the 401 bore, but you'd have to have it sonic checked to be sure there's enough wall thickness. You'd also have to notch the bottom of the cylinder walls for rod clearance. Main journals on the crank are the same, but rod journals are different. The small journals on the 360 crank wouldn't have enough meat to be offset ground to a 401 stroke. Rod length and wrist pin size are different. Last, the factory 401 crank and rods are forged, where the 360 has cast iron parts.

If you have a 360 block that sonic checks good, you'd have to drop in a 401 crank, rods, and pistons in to have a 401.
