If you were going to put together a 360 or 401 for strictly low rpm torque output, like towing, why would you not use the smaller valve 304 castings to increase the low speed air flow velocity and thus create for torque. Did Ford do this with their 5.0 liter motors? True it would be limited in high rpm performance... Might work with one of theose old SP2P's with the tiny runners.(????)

I wouldnt limit the air flow that much. What I would do is get the right cam (RV) and increase compression. Using a very hot spark (Think HEI or MSD BIllet 6a) with a 600cfm or 750cfm carb (Larger primaries smaller secondaries) could get you lots of low end. Years ago I did a 431 stroker with a high volume oil pump and that same style of cam (but it was a custom grind) along with a MSD setup and got GOBS of useable torque from 600rpm on.

The engine I put in my CJ is a simple rebuilt 304. Only thing special in it is an RV cam. I put headers and glasspacks on it, and couldn't believe the low end torque increase.

Do you mean smaller primaries and larger secondaries like a spreadbore Holley list 6210 650 cfm double pumper which they still offer brand new for ~$400 or list 80555C in a vacuum secondary for ~$365 from jegs or summit ? Did AMC ever produce a spreadbore style cast iron intake manifold ? Always liked and have the MSD 6T box which is supposed to be more "heavy duty" with more internal potting and comes with a harness ready to accept a stand alone soft-touch rev limiter box. A 360 or 401 with 2.02/1.68 heads, an rv cam, cast iron spreadbore intake, a new vacuum secondary 650 spreadbore fitted with the proper color secondary spring, and a properly curved distributor ought to be one heck of a stump puller.

almost all of the 4bbl carbed jeeps built used a spreadbore cast iron manifold and a motorcraft 4350 carb i think.

Gotta be careful though, the spread bore on the MC are different than the spread bores on the Rochester's.
