I have a freshly rebuilt AMC 360 on a 1978 jeep CJ5. I put a holley 4bbl (4160) 600CFM carb on it. I filled the fuel bowls with fuel thinking that by the time the fuel ran out of them, fuel would have started being drawing from the tank. I've done the process twice and still I'm not recieving fuel to the carb.

1) How long should it take to start getting fuel? It is a mechanical pump
2) Is there a way to install a fuel pump wrong?

It should have drawn fuel up if it started.

Simple things first. Is the tank full enough? Is the line clear from the tank to the pump? Is the pump new? I've seen pumps bad out of the box. There is a definite input and outlet, you shouldn't be able to reverse them.

Drop a hose connected to the pump inlet into a can of gas, see if it works. That will tell you where your problem may be (tank and line, or pump.

i know when i let the jeep sit for a few days and all the fuel evaporates out it can take a good bit to start, but once it fires once or twice its good. Sounds like your tank may be to low

that will only keep it from starting not pulling fuel up into the carb. did you forget the fuel pump eccentric?
