Picked up a 401 that is susposed to have been freshly rebuilt. it looks clean enough you can eat off it. Picts here: http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc19/aallison28/?start=100

I know nothing about it. I've never even heard it run. Took the valve covers off today and they look very clean inside.

The head casting is 3220502 so they are from a 74 and from the little research I've found, they are a good casting and will work very well.

Motor is going in a Jeep and I want torque out of it. I don't want to tear into the motor unless something breaks. Here is my plan...........

Keep the stock carb. I understand it's very good for offroad. At least it's little brother on the 304 is. Is FI that much of an improvment for a stock motor?

Keep stock intake. Might change to a duel plane down the road or if I find one on the cheap.

Change stock exhaust to Doug Thorley Try-Y's, duel exhaust with a cross over if I can get it to work. Single exhaust will be fine as a second option if the duels don't work. I want a good, deep mellow tone, but I don't want it loud as hell.

Change stock ignition out for the TFI. But I'm a little afrade of the "eating cam gears" issue. The stock 74 ignigion is still there so I can pull the dizzy gear off and put it on a later motorcraft.

I'd like to address the oiling issues as much as I can without tearing it apart. Remote oiling? Bigger oil pan?

Get rid of as much engine crap as I can. I want a basic motor in a Jeep. No extra wires and vacuum lines floping around. AC is being turned into an onboard air compresser.......I think. Keeping PS. Going to a 12SI alternator.

Thats about all I can think of. It's going in front of a wide ratio T-18/D20 with a set of J truck D44/D60 axles.

It's not a hot rod but I want a good, powerful, reliable motor.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

just get a good cam and have fun with it. make sure to replace the lifters with the cam and maybe find a performer intake and a 650 carb with vaccuum secondaries and you will have plenty of torque. you probably wont notice much with a set of headers so I would save the money for an intake and carb. you could also put in an HEI dizzy from bulltear here and make the wiring even simpler (1 wire) than with the TFI

i always put on arp rod bolts and main bolts for peace of mind...

for a stock compression motor... id look at the lunati or the engle as my first choices though the ex256 has been proven with good results and the summit 8600 is a time proven favorite some say it has less low end hp and torque than the comp.

Pick a cam then add the performer intake and a HEI one wire distributor along with a matched set of hardened gears and Go. yes fuel injection is a nice improvement but it takes tuning to get it dialed and timing effects the fueling curve and visa versus so keep that in mind. id run a Rochester for the time being and start saving for a TBI setup that you can tune yourself
