I have a '72 401 complete short block, Edelbrock Performer heads and intake and Crane roller rockers to start with.

My question is what build recipe can someone suggest to get me in the 450hp/torque range with what parts I already have.
Any head work and cam recommendations would be much appreciated.

The engine will be mated to a 5 speed in a '72 Gremlin with a 4:10 gear.

Thanks

At the crank, it would be fairly easy - a bit spendy, but easy to get 450 to the rear wheels . . . a lot more $$$.

Fuzz's 401 is runing 357HP @ the rear wheels and he's well built (well, his wife say's so :!: ) but his Jeep is rolling at 111 MPH in the 1/4 on pump gas.

I am talking @ the crank, I guess I should've been more specific. I am prepared for "a bit spendy". So what is Fuzz's build that sounds like what I am shooting for.

Thanks

You should be able to get that with edelbrock heads, decent cam and a good intake and carb. I would shoot for 10-1 compression on the pistons (need pistons give a hollar) and even with a good solid lifter cam you should hit those numbers.

I was thinking of a camshaft with about 235-245 duration and a 510-530 lift.cam from some of the builds I have read through online.
Would the heads need any porting, etc for these numbers?

Thanks

No porting needed that is a pretty tame cam for these heads. Sounds like a decent cam for power up to 6500rpm

That's good news as far as the head porting goes.

I don't really want a tame cam, I would appreciate any camshaft suggestion you have for those heads.

As far as pistons, Edelbrock says :

"The intake and exhaust runners are CNC-profiled for superior flow and the efficient 54cc dual-quench combustion chamber produces around a 9.5:1 compression ratio in 401 V8s with stock style pistons."

What pistons do you offer to acheive 10:1 compression?

By the way, I am not an engine builder by any means, I just want to be educated in terms of explaining to my engine builder what I want so we are on the same page.

Thanks for your help.

Yes the heads produce 9.5-1 with the high compression pistons not the common stock pistons. We would do a custom forged set for you.

Sounds good.....any price difference for custom pistons?

Good to hear from you Rich
Sorry for the delay. I can bring it over anytime and bring those Eddy heads for you to look over. Or if you want you can come take a look at the Gremmies, especially the one with the Pontiac 350.

CHEAP is always good!

Eric

PS- got any Pontiac friends looking for a 350/350 combo let me know
