I have a 304 and i'm tyring to start it now. does anyone know where to line up the oil pump gear to the distributor gear so I can actually get spark and close to 0 degrees on timing? currently I have the engine at TDC and the distributor is lined up and pointing at #1 cylinder.

Is this right or do I need to have it lined up differently?

all you have to do is get it to engage the oil pump where it engages it doesnt matter as long as your rotor is pointed to the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap and the engine is at TDC. When trying to start it try turning the dizzy a little bit so that the ignition is advanced slightly they tend to start better this way. If it pops and lights the carb on fire you are 180 degrees off on your timing
