So I pulled the trigger and placed my bulltear order.

So far this is what I'm looking at, tell me what you think!

AMC 360 1988' bock/heads/crank
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Edelbrock 600CFM carb
***Engle K54 Grind Cam***

Bulltear Order:
Main Bearings .010
Timing Chain Set
Distributor Gear Set
Cam Bearings
Rod Bearings .010
Hi-Temp Head Gaskets
Cast HD Pistons .030
AMC Oil Pump kit
HRC gears
Nickel Oil Filter Adapter
Nickel Timing Cover

I still have to pick up:

Oil Pan (Trans Dapt Slam Gard)
Headers (Edelbrock Ceramic Coated Shorty's)
Valve Covers (Legend Black Powder Coated)

This is for my FSJ project on a 1982 J-10 Pickup has a Torqufilte 727 tranny.

Any first thoughts on the build? The block/heads are at the machine shop now.

Don't most crank grinders include a set of bearings with the grind?
No offense meant to MC, but I always rebuild and reuse the factory cover and factory cam/dist. gears whenever possible.

I went with chromoly rings... never had an issue with sealing and the only time it smoked was when it first fired and that was only when the excess assembly lube burned off (one puff).
The 6al's (Pro Comps, Summits, etc are pretty good across the board and they're cheap... I'm running a pro comp 6al, been running it for a few years without issue.
Spend the extra money and get the rhoads lifters.
Save money and keep the Cardone distributor and just do the cap-a-adapt... you will save money and this distributor is good through out the rpm range.
8mm or 8.5mm wires and you'll be good to go... Whiteperformance has wires on ebay or you can google his shop as he has good wires for super low prices. His HEI's are dirt cheap and are QA'd before he puts them up for sale. I could be wrong but these look Identical as Bulltears HEI  only whiteperformance is cheaply priced (Plus he guarantees them for life)
Get a HV water pump... hell, if you are mechanically sound the stock pump works really good.
Serpentine vs v-belts... IMO for the money spent for the serpentine it's not worth it... I like saving money when I can and v-belts seem to last me for a long time plus extras are cheap. but, that's just my opinion.

Our HEI is identical to the Mallory unit but there are a few cheap chinese versions. Funny, I wonder how he plans on dealing with the cheap distributor gear eating the oem cam gear.

Great thanks for the info guys,

I checked out Skip White's Performance.

Seems the AMC stuff is no longer on his website. :(:

That being said, I would like the flexability of a 'standard' distributor cap so when/if I need a new one I'm not waiting for one in the mail.

I'm looking at the HEI one on bulltears website, can you 'enlighten' me to what the difference is between the $189, and $229 models? Also are these caps/rotors standard or a certain brand?

I was looking at the 2018XL Rhoads super lube lifters before I posted so this is probably how I'll end up going.

I'm WAAAY over budget on this project already, and still have to pay for some other important things to get the truck running so I'm probably going to finish out with the HV aluminum water pump and 8 or 8.5mm wires autozone since they have a lifetime warranty.

Going to order some Prothane motor/tranny mounts, and a 6AL box next week. I still need to locate some rings, can't find any online.

Pics are soon to come, I have to get the truck moved, and start prepping it to take the engine.

The $229 model was a pro-form, no longer carried. Skip the rhoades lifters I dont know of anyone who has been happy with these in a AMC V8.

Do you have any suggestions on lifters?

Also any thoughts on roller rocker-setups?

I want to build the strongest/most reliable motor I can afford.

More to come, as the engine is completed, and I get the truck ready I'll post a journal in the 'restorations' section.
