I get my steel hopefully saturday If my cousin has free time since he gets a discount. Im gonna frame my water table with angle and drop the sheet it weld it from the bottom and then seal it. dunno if im gonna do 3" angle, if they have 2 3/4 angle If I go 3" Ill just lower the table supports on the legs. and If I weld say 16gauge sheet on top of the angle inside the frame and do the 1/8 on top to allow water to flow under thats 3/16 closer to the top.

2.5" tall slats + 3/16 leaves me 5/16 to the top of the angle for water, so some stuff might be able to be havlf submerged or touching the bottom. Kinda hard to plan the water table I heard I was getting slat holders, Kinda wanna know what they look like dont wanna buy stuff I dont need atm, even though I can use it for other stuff anyways.

YEah that steel isnt cheap, the 3x3 sq tubing is pricy i paid 89.00 per 24 foot joint. I hope to get started on my table tomorrow i am gonna try to get all my steel cut i got the 4x8 sheet cut in half today.

Well got some more work done i got the table all tacked together gonna finish welding it up tomorrow and get the castors on. I am gonna do the top rails last incase i get any warping while welding it all up. I am also going to ad some leveling legs and they will also act as stops so the table wont move during cutting.

Good idea on the rails. I got mine tacked together - the two 44" rails that the water table sits on. Both rails that the rail bolts to are level and square. Expect the tubing has variances in it and if I lay the level on what would be the Y-axis its 0.0* or in one spot .4* Now I dont know If Im over thinking this, but Id imagine both rails need to be pefectly flush and the connecting gantry be perpindicualr and 90* to the supporting rails to not cause issues. Now this isnt something I can really fix, and the only thing to do If it is an issue is shim the spots, which wouldnt be much. I was gonna leave my main rails on and tack some extra tubing I have in between them to detour the possibility of warping, or do a weld cool it off with the air gun and then do another. I built a car jig that was 12' long out of 1/8 2 x 3 and only got .1* off at one corner doing it that way and I clamped and ratchet strapped 2 more 12' pieces on top of them to stop it from twisting.

I keep wanting to call and ask because its hard to explain, But im not gonna fully weld anything until I get my kit, I was thinking i was gonna get the gantry this week and the electronics would come next week, just waiting I guess.

07-21-2011, 02:57 PM
YEah the rails being level and square are whats gonna need to be done right. I have one leg that has grown 3/16 of an inch taller than the other 3 i will have to cut that one to get the rails level. I am gonna wait like you till i get the kit before i do the final welding on the rails.

Mav68erick
07-21-2011, 03:06 PM
I almost wanna drill tap the rails prior to putting them back on the rest of the table, bolt the gantry rails to it, and then tack weld a bar across the front and back, kinda of like there portable table they sell, then put one in the center, make sure the gantry moves smooth and then set it on the legs tack it, check it again, stitch weld tack, and rinse and repeat. that seems like the most sure fire way. I knew in my mind the rails are the hardest part, should just bought the dam thing complete, even though im happy atm of how sqaure and level iam thus far, its the drawing in and out after final weld that makes or breaks you, who cares if the legs arent straight all it is, is a table, the top has to be level and true, and the water table x distance from the top, if those arent correct then its worthless.

Either way cant really think about it til the kit comes, planning 3 steps ahead without knowing what the next step and step 2 are is pointless.

Mav68erick

I was gonna use the rails to transfer the holes. Due to how much I hate tapping, and having to do 28? per side and worry about getting the straight, im gonna make a tap jig If I were to do it on the table.

Weld a nut to a plate with a hole in it Line it up clamp the plate down on both side and voila! perpinduclar to the rail every time. The fact nuts are usually a littleoversized should leave enough play for the tap, and if using a machine tap all the shavings should get pushed down anyways. Plus 3/16 isnt very far to go, so shouldnt need to clear the tap very many times.

Matt is it possible to get our software? I downloaded a demo of Mach3, kinda pointless really unless It gets set up as a sim, and you have sheetcam to generate the g code just to test it. It looks different then what most people have as far as background goes with the plasma profile opened, I think I seen a tutorial on how you can edit it for your own personal needs, not that I need or want to.

Drilling with a tap thread cutter is a bad idea by hand with a 2x2 tube it can lead to a broken drill and a loss of a mounting hole. Sure we can get software out right away. I think we were waiting on a huge order of CAD to show up. I know its in transit and should be here tomorrow.

you got your stuff already?? I havent heard anything on my package yet. as for my water table havent even started. I tacked in my 2 44" pieces that the water table sits on and added a 3rd piece in the middle for support last night. Prolly get my angle iron tomorrow for the table along the lines of what you did, I wanted to wait til I seen the slat holders. did you use 3 x 3 angle? Here they only have 3/16 thick for 3x3 or did you use 2 3/4 x 2 3/4. I wanted to make it taller to have more water and possible submerdge the steel a tad or just to help keep water for leaving the pan

Just called waited on a call back on the status.. I cant wait any longer ... its only been 3.5 weeks I think? I know the Candcnc stuff says 3-4 weeks im just excited

It was nice working with lasers, but by the time you spend all day at work you dont wanna bother cutting anything out for yourself not to mention when being busy. Before I left I cut some brackets out for my Harley for rear set pegs for a cafe style and lo and behold the cut sequence was off cut the outside and then went to cut the final hole as I wasnt paying attention crash!... I go lucky it z Over traveled between slats. The limit switch needs adjusted on them personally, 3" below the bottom of the material is a bit much.

it prolly depends where we mount our control boxes, im gonna mount mine to the side or inside on a plate like I seen on a 4x8 or 5x10 able, then I think the carrier starts at about midway on the table. I already popped the 2 zinced pieces on the ends.

did you get slat holders in your gantry box?

and how many limit stop bolts did you have. I installed 4 on my x rails, but I cant remember if I took 4 or 6 out of the pack, looked all over cant find any so must only been 4. none for the Y rail on the gantry.

OK i got the computer hooked up and started doing the setup but cant get the z home switch to light up in mach3. I checked to make sure the switch and wiring were right and they are right in the cnc box on z home. Then i tried to jog the table but when i hit the tab button i dont get mpg mode with the arrows i get something else.
So i hit the load material button and the gantry moved but the x axis motors dont seem to be moving together so the gantry was a little off on the rails. The y azis motor seems to be going too fast as i can seen the gear jumping and making a grinding noise and went past the end of the gear rack. The z axis tried to go to high as i can see the torch mount flex so i had to make it come down by screwing it by hand to stop the binding. Oh the problems this is killing me but i did get the torch to fire .
PLEASE HELP ME!

Mav68erick
09-04-2011, 01:21 PM
When I jog my table you just need to turn your box on, then he motors from the green button on top. Then I hit the reset button in mach 3 and jog it.

I dont click tab or anything, as long as its reset it seems to move for me Arrows for x and y page up and down for Z.

you did make sure to slave your other X motor right?

Load material button is bad.. I accidently clicked it a couple of times and things went boom.

Ive had my Z flex as well, if I dont lower my torch say .100 off the sheet and Zero Z with my x and y If my rapid height is set to high in sheetcam it will go up to far.

Double check your motor tuning, sometimes Id go back and the numbers reset you have to change the number and then click the save button ON each Axis motor, you cant change them all and save once.

X set number save
Y set number save
Z set number save
A set number save

surprisingly all this went smooth for me, wait til you get to test your height control I dont think im gonna bother using it, it seems so touchy. And I spent half my day doing line tests and cut out of 16g and seems like no matter how much I changed something it looks the exact same so I had to quit for the day before I went off

also your z light wont come on the instant it touches you prolly know this, its gonna float the torch carrier a ways before it clicks, then you gotta do a Z reference and figre out how far it moves and edit the mp-3000 post you used in sheetcam with this number so it knows what offset to program

mine was .145 double checked it today same thing maybe Ill cut something thicker this 16ga is giving me crap, Ive heard it could be a steel supplier issue as well.

sweet, looks like you set your z at 24000, when I did mine I set it to the 1200 or w/e and you couldnt see it move....

you notice the noise when you bring it back to the front? I think its the motor on the opposite side fro the spring tension holder bouncing, mine makes a weird noise coming from that side freaks me out, and I also dont like how if you grab your torch you can wiggle the entire z axis frame.

Did you get your Z home light to come on?

Soldering two wires to the lower 2 connections not the upper two will do it. Click diagnostics in Mach 3 then physically push up on the Z axis to get the home to light up. If something else lights up then you wired it to the wrong 2 spade connects in the box. Z home is pretty easy to diagnose if you need to call in we will help 651-257-7917.

HEre is the test procedures mine does this but flashes 3 times instead of 5.
Activate the recessed TEST Button on the front panel of the MP3000-DTHC or your unit with the DTHC module installed and connected. The TEST LED should start flashing. The unit goes into a test sequence where the TIP VOLTS DRO is set to 100 and the UP screen LED flashes 5 times. Then the TIP VOLTS DRO is set to 150 and the DOWN LED flashes 5 times. This test sequence repeats until you hit the Test Button again and the TEST LED stops flashing.
AIf the test does not show the above results the most probable cause is the serial communications is not working between the PC and the MP3000. Make sure you have the right port selected. If you were sent a special serial cable with the RS232 buffer module (see photo) make sure it is installed correctly.

cool what thickness sheets you get and what did you pay for them if you dont mind me asking.

I cut some 3/16 cut better when I lowered the cut height from .060 to .040 and only had a bevel on the one side looked pretty good, test welded it because I heard someone say it welded funny, welded pretty dam easy I thought prolly cuz it was clean

I got 4x8-1/8 thick and they were 89.00 plus tax each. The cut is so nice on the 1/8 and its a good size not to heavy and it doesnt warp.

I think one of the first things I want to cut is a decorative sundial. But there are so many cool choices from plasma spider that it will be hard to choose. I am guessing that there will be some 3D pieces in my future too.

I was just going over your original build for information on hooking up the electronics and I was curious what the black box is on the side of your plasma? Our's did not come with this. Do you think that is because we got the CPC port on our plasma? Is there a good place to go for info on hooking up the electronics?

Thanks!
