Is the metal shield on the bottom of intake to block oil from the pcv system and or to keep heat soaking the intake? Guy I work with claims it has to be there or you will over heat. I asked, how is that? Chevrolet doesn't use any heat shield and never have issues. I say it's only for PCV being AMC has a unique setup.

It's there to keep oil out of the PCV system, along with the valley pan (gasket). If heat in the manifold were a problem, do you think they'd put an exhaust crossover right below the carb on a stock manifold?

PCV baffle, you can get away without it, but it doesn't hurt to leave it in either.
